SPENCER, Iowa — Tiger Sports Academy in Spencer aims to help local kids develop softball and baseball skills.
Since the nonprofit formed, work was completed on renovations to its new training facility. Tiger Sports Academy is set to open Saturday, January 10th.
Inside the former Spencer Middle School gym, Tiger Sports Academy has created a 4,500 square foot facility designed to help young athletes develop their skills.
“We came up with the concept to form a 501C3. Worked very strategically with Iowa Lakes Corridor Development. They were a key partner in helping to get us off the ground. Connecting us to the right resources,” said Mike Koenecke, executive director of Tiger Sports Academy.
The Iowa Lakes Corridor Development Corporation helped the academy secure funding and navigate the development process.
“Our role really is, you know Mike and his board came together, how do we stack some finances, what kind of grants are out there available at the local, regional, and state level,” explained Curt Strouth, president and CEO of the Iowa Lakes Corridor and Development Corporation. “To bring it all together and figure out a way to make this a reality for our community.”
Board members were able to raise the $260,000 needed for renovations and operation and flip the space in just 10 weeks.
“Indoor turf, state of the art equipment, batting cages, pitching machines, you name it. Our target audience is anyone in the surrounding area that would essentially be k-12 who has the heart and interest to develop that skill,” said Koenecke.
Memberships are available for individuals and families.
