After missing out on pitcher Edward Cabrera, who was traded from the Miami Marlins to the Chicago Cubs on Wednesday, the New York Yankees are reportedly pivoting their attention to two other All-Stars on the trade block.
According to Bryan Hoch of MLB.com, the Yankees are engaged with the Washington Nationals about left-hander MacKenzie Gore and the Milwaukee Brewers about right-hander Freddy Peralta, among other trade targets.

Peralta, 29, is one year away from free agency. Gore, 26, is three years away. Because each is owed less than $10 million next year, their current teams are under no duress to trade them.
The Yankees, however, have four Top-100 prospects according to MLB Pipeline, more than many teams can offer in trade talks. And the offseason has shaped into somewhat of an arms race among the American League East hopefuls.
The Toronto Blue Jays signed arguably the best free agent starter on the market in Dylan Cease. The Baltimore Orioles acquired Shane Baz from the Tampa Bay Rays and signed Zach Eflin. The Boston Red Sox traded for Sonny Gray.
The upshot: there’s some pressure on the Yankees to round out a rotation that runs four-deep (Max Fried, Will Warren, Luis Gil and Schlittler) until Carlos Rodon, Gerrit Cole and Clarke Schmidt are cleared to return from their elbow surgery rehabs.
If the Yankees can’t upgrade their collection of starters in free agency, don’t be surprised if they pivot quickly to one of their new trade targets.
Peralta led the National League in wins (17-6) and finished fifth in Cy Young Award voting last year. He made 33 starts and finished with a 2.70 ERA — both career-highs — for the 97-win Brewers.
Gore was a first-time All-Star after a strong first half of the season that saw him go 4-8 with a 3.02 ERA in 19 starts. A poor second half (1-7, 6.75 ERA) sullied his final stats, but the Yankees might be willing to bet on his potential over the next three years.
