The Minnesota Twins haven’t done much heavy lifting yet this offseason, but they aren’t the only ones. MLB offseasons have grown a reputation for slogging along at the slowest pace of any major professional sport in America.

President Derek Falvey did move in on free agent Josh Bell, who will likely take over first base duties, after the departure of Ty France. Beyond that pickup, though, their acquisitions have come on the fringes.

One depth player from 2025 lost in the Twins’ roster shuffle was infielder Ryan Fitzgerald, who was waived after Minnesota swung a trade for Josh Bell’s likely backup at first base, Eric Wagaman.

Unfortunately, Fitzgerald — who played in 700 minor league games before making his MLB debut with the Twins last season — did not make it through waivers and will not be returning to Fort Myers next month.

After slashing .196/.302/.457 with a 106 OPS+ in 24 games with the Minnesota Twins last season, as a backup shortstop, the 31-year-old former Creighton standout has been claimed by the World Series Champion Los Angeles Dodgers, according to LA reporter Alden Gonzalez.

Fitzgerald, 31, spent 24 games in the majors last season and slashed .277/.367/.469 in 59 Triple-A games. Can play SS, 3B, 2B. He was DFA’d last week.

The Dodgers currently have Tommy Edman and Miguel Rojas occupying second base. Mookie Betts starts at shortstop and Max Muncy plays third base.

Obviously, Fitzgerald isn’t going to to LA to take those starting spots. Nonetheless, he will now occupy a 40-man spot on the Dodgers’ roster. Clearly, LA must see Fitzgerald as a worthy depth piece, even if the Twins did not.

Minnesota hosts the Dodgers at Target Field this season from June 22-24.
