If the Philadelphia Phillies sign Bo Bichette, something has to give with Alec Bohm, as he immediately becomes the most obvious piece to move.

That’s why Stephen Parello of FanSided connecting the New York Yankees to Bohm makes some amount of sense.

However, my question is, if Bohm is truly available if they sign Bichette, why are we only talking about the Yankees? Why wouldn’t the Pirates be all over this if it’s actually possible?

Parello laid out the situation clearly, and there’s a lot of sense behind it.

“If the Phillies end up signing Bichette, they’ll have their own logjam to sort out. It’s been reported that in the event they sign the former Blue Jay, they will then look to trade third baseman Alec Bohm. Bohm, 29, avoided arbitration by agreeing to a $10.2 million contract and is in his final year of team control.

“Bohm checks a lot of boxes for the Yankees. He’s right-handed, and while he was pretty bad defensively at third, he’s improved over the last two years, posting four outs above average in 2024, and taking a slight step back, recording -2 last season. Average-ish is the best way to describe him with the glove,” he wrote.

From the Yankees perspective, it could make sense. Bohm is right-handed bat, corner infielder and a potential short-term commitment.

But the same could be said for the Pittsburgh Pirates.

The Pirates are desperate for reliable offense at third base.

They’re trying to take a step forward in a winnable division, and unlike the Yankees, they’re not in a position to feel too confident without more offensive help.

For Pittsburgh, this would give the team a Ke’Bryan Hayes replacement it has been looking for over the past few months after moving him at the deadline a year ago.

If the Phillies are interested in trading Bohm if they land Bichette, they should be listening to more than just a few calls. I could definitely see the Pirates and a few other teams getting involved.

At the very least, the Pirates make a lot more sense to make than the Yankees do as of now.
