The New York Yankees are finally in the news for something semi-positive. They are acquiring Miami Marlins‘ starter Ryan Weathers in exchange for prospects, according to Jack Curry of YES Network.
Craig Mish of Sports Grid indicates that the four minor-league prospects are: Dillon Lewis, Brendan Jones, Dillon Jasso, and Juan Matheus. Ryan Weathers has made 24 starts over the past two seasons, but Jack Curry indicates a cool note that David Weathers, Ryan’s dad, played for the Yankees as part of his 19-year career. So, what does this deal mean for the Yankees?

Yankees to Acquire Ryan Weathers
The Yankees are acquiring left-handed starter Ryan Weathers. While it’s a small-ish move, it could be the start of a big back-half of this MLB hot stove season.
This is the second notable trade the Marlins have made in the last week, as they sent starter Edward Cabrera to the Cubs for prospect Owen Caissie.
Weathers has had trouble staying healthy, but his arsenal features a lively fastball that can reach 97 MPH, and a strong sweeper as a secondary pitch. He came up with the San Diego Padres, but posted an unimpressive 5.73 ERA over 29 starts and 143 innings with the Padres (2021-2023).

However, with the Marlins over the last three seasons, his ERA is 4.11 over 26 starts and 138 injuries, but his main issue has been health, and he pitched in just 38.1 innings last season.
If he has an impressive spring camp and shows he’s healthy, he will likely break New York’s Opening Day roster, as Gerrit Cole and Carlos Rodon are still expected to miss the start of the 2026 season, and Clarke Schmidt is still rehabbing from injury as well.
Adding Ryan Weather does add another lefty option to the Yankees’ depth chart, who now have five southpaws on their current roster (Tim Hill, Carlos Rodon, Ryan Yarborough, Max Fried).
Is This a Good Trade for the Yankees?
This will remain to be seen until all the prospects that the Yankees dealt away either finish their career or make it to MLB.
Ryan Weathers is sort of a “take a flyer” addition, and the Yankees’ front office likely didn’t see much in those four prospects, as they wouldn’t have given up that much for a Ryan Weathers, whose value has diminished in recent seasons.
The Padres opted to use Weathers in a bullpen role at times, which the Yankees may also adopt once the rotation becomes crowded towards the middle of the summer, or they could use him as trade bait and flip him for a player they are more interested in.
All things considered, it’s a good start for New York, but certainly not a ‘needle-mover’ like the fan base has been expecting.
