The Pittsburgh Pirates have traded right-handed reliever Chase Shugart to the Philadelphia Phillies for third base prospect Francisco Loreto. Shugart had been designated for assignment by the Pirates last week to make room on the 40-man roster for first baseman/outfielder Ryan O’Hearn.
Shugart made 35 appearances out of the bullpen for Pittsburgh last offseason and went 4-3 with a 3.40 ERA while holding opponents to a .206 batting average. The 29-year-old earned his first big-league win on April 22 against the Los Angeles Angels.
Loreto, 18, played 47 games in the Florida Complex League in 2025 and slashed .237/.332/.396 with 10 doubles, a triple, five home runs, 16 RBI and two stolen bases. He hit .230 with a .680 OPS in 30 games in the Dominican Summer League in 2024.
The Phillies signed him as an amateur free agent from Venezuela in 2024.
