The New York Yankees have had a quiet offseason, not making any major changes to their roster, despite losing some key players. With the Blue Jays winning the division last year and the Red Sox on the rise, one has to wonder why the Yankees are taking such a conservative approach.
They finally made a noteworthy move on Tuesday, trading multiple minor leaguers for left-handed pitcher Ryan Weathers from the Miami Marlins. Weathers is the second big-name pitcher the Marlins have traded this offseason.

Weathers has been a solid pitcher over the past two seasons; however, he has had issues staying on the field. Over the past two seasons, he has made just 24 starts, throwing 125 innings. The stats look good, though, as Weathers put up a 3.74 ERA with a 22% strikeout rate.
Weathers has a very impressive three-pitch mix, with his fastball averaging nearly 97 MPH, and a very good sweeper and changeup that can miss bats and contribute to his solid strikeout rate.

This is an important move for the Yankees. They will be without Carlos Rodon and Gerrit Cole for the early part of the 2026 season, and could be without Clarke Schmidt for the entire season. Weathers could begin the season as the Yankees number three starter, but eventually move to the 5th spot if everyone is healthy.
Although it sounds crazy to talk about the Yankees and not wanting to spend money, that is the current reality for the historic franchise. This move for Weathers was cost-effective, which is something they have been focused on for many years now.

By saving money with this move rather than signing a free agent pitcher, money remains available for them to attempt to bring back Cody Bellinger, who enjoyed a lot of success last season with the Yankees.
