Ryan Weathers (Image source: Instagram) In a major off-season move, the New York Yankees have signed the star pitcher Ryan Weathers for a four-prospect trade with the Miami Marlins. Ahead of the 2026 spring training, the Yankees have consciously chosen to trade four young players in exchange for 26-year-old left-handed pitcher Ryan Weathers. The deal, finalised on Wednesday, January 14, also comes as the Yankees seek reinforcements amidst their star players being sidelined due to injuries.
Who are the four players headed to Miami Marlins
Under the trade package, the Marlins are going to acquire outfielders Brendan Jones and Dillon Lewis, and infielders Dylan Jasso and Juan Matheus of the minor league system of the Yankees.
Brendan Jones:
Jones is an outfielder who specializes in stealing bases and making contact in the lower minors, ranked among New York’s Top 30 prospects.
Dillon Lewis:
Lewis is another well-thought out-outfield prospect who demonstrated power and run-production skills and is an important element in the reconstruction strategy of Miami.
Dylan Jasso:
A corner infielder with good offensive statistics at the Double-A level, Jasso can be a good addition to the Marlins’ system, bringing a good hit tool and gap power to the Marlins’ system.
Juan Matheus:
Matheus was the youngest of the four and has a great on-base and speed capability, and an infield defensive versatility. This group is a big haul of position-player talent to Miami, as it fits the youth-based approach of the Marlins as they re-align their farm system.
What the Yankees gained and why
The Yankees received (in exchange) 26-year-old left-handed starter Ryan Weathers, a combination of various pitches and interesting potential. Weathers was a first-round pick in the previous year, where he had a 3.28 ERA with 23 strikeouts across 24+innings pitched. Moreover, New York’s rotation is marred by the unavailability of Gerrit Cole, Carlos Rodon, and Clarke Schmidt, who are undergoing surgeries, and therefore, adding depth to the team has been a priority. Weathers is another choice that the Yankees have when starting their staff behind the known starter, Max Fried. The trade highlights the differing interests of the two clubs. While the Yankees are working towards present-day competitiveness, the Marlins are working towards future roster strengthed by youth. Also read: Ryan Weathers trade gives New York Yankees immediate pitching help while Gerrit Cole and Carlos Rodón recover
