Travis Brazil, a seasoned law enforcement veteran and Lufkin native, will become Lufkin’s police chief in March 2026.

LUFKIN, Texas — The city of Lufkin on Friday has announced its next police chief.

Travis Brazil, a Lufkin native who currently serves as a major with the Texas Rangers, will begin his role as police chief on March 1. He will retire from the Texas Department of Public Safety in February to become Lufkin’s chief.

“I am honored to have the opportunity to lead the Lufkin Police Department. This community means so much to me, and I look forward to continuing my career in public safety right here at home,” Brazil said.

According to the announcement, Brazil has over 34 years of law enforcement experience. His career began in 1991 as a jailer with the Angelina County Sheriff’s Office before he joined DPS in 1994 as a Highway Patrol trooper. 

He rose up to serve as as a Highway Patrol sergeant, special agent, Texas Ranger and ultimately Texas Ranger major overseeing the Special Operations Group at DPS Headquarters in Austin.

He graduated Lufkin High School in 1991, earned a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice administration from Tarleton State University and graduated from the FBI National Academy.

“Travis Brazil’s depth of experience and commitment to public safety make him an outstanding choice for Chief of Police. His decades of service, leadership roles, and strong ties to our community will ensure the Lufkin Police Department continues to thrive under his guidance,” City Manager Kevin Gee said.

Mayor Pro Tem Robert Shankle added his excitement to adding Brazil as chief. 

“His knowledge, integrity, and proven leadership will be invaluable as we work together to keep Lufkin safe and strengthen the trust between law enforcement and our citizens,” Shankle said.
