MANISTEE – Whitehall visited Manistee May 12 for a baseball doubleheader and came up with a split, with Manistee winning the first game and Whitehall taking the second.
The scores were a 2-1 victory for Manistee in the opener and 4-1 for Whitehall in game 2
In game two, which Manistee won, Evan Thomas threw a one-hitter, pitched all seven innings, giving up one run, striking out nine, and walking two.
The Vikings fell behind 1-0 in the first inning on a sacrifice fly but were able to tie the game 1-1 in the bottom of the third, with some help from a Manistee error.
The Vikings then took the lead in the bottom of the fourth when Manistee committed another error, Jakobe Monroe got hit by a pitch, and Nate Betz hit a sacrifice fly.
The result was the Vikings scoring three runs.
Brock Morningstar, Betz, Monroe and Noah Peterson each drove in a run for Whitehall, and Thomas had two hits.
The first game was a pitcher’s duel between Morningstar and Manistee’s Eli Workman.
An error in the bottom of the first inning by the Vikings and a ground out enabled Manistee to score their two runs for the game.
Whitehall got their only run in the top of the third as Morningstar reached first base on an error by the Manistee second baseman, and Betz scored.
Betz stole second, which enabled him to come home.
Morningstar went five and two-thirds innings, giving up the two runs on five hits, and struck out six and walking three.
Ethan DeShong came in relief and pitched a perfect one-third of an inning.
Thomas had three hits for the Vikings, and Betz stole two bases.
