GREENVILLE, N.C. (WITN) – South Lenoir beat Midway 5-4 Saturday Night in Game 3 of the 2A East Baseball Regionals, to secure their spot in the State Championship Series.
Junior Gage Howard was huge for the Blue Devils, hitting a three RBI triple to give them the lead early on, and then ending the game defensively on an obscure play.
Leading by one run with one out and a runner on first, Howard grabbed a chopper to shortstop, shuffle to tag second base, and then fired to first base, except the runner beat him there and the runner was initially called safe. Then, umpires gathered, and ruled that a baserunning obstruction had been committed by Midway, resulting in the 3rd and final out.
“I completely blacked out, I really don’t know what happened after I caught that, or fielded that ground ball,” Howard tried to recall, “Everything just went black from there.”
Next up, South Lenoir will meet East Rutherford in the 2A Final, the 1-Seed in the West Bracket.
