Eugenio Suárez records first hit in Mariners return

Most of the top MLB free agents are off the board, but there are still impact players available. Spring training starts in a few weeks, and a player like Eugenio Suárez could be the final piece to a team looking to compete for a World Series championship in 2026.

Alex Bregman was the top third baseman available this offseason, but Suárez offers a lot to a lineup. His power is unquestioned, and he brings a veteran presence to a clubhouse.

A team like the Boston Red Sox might make the most sense to sign Suárez to fill the void left by Bregman after he signed with the Chicago Cubs. A sneaky team like the Los Angeles Angels could also be a good fit for the third baseman.

Angels In Need of Third Baseman After Anthony Rendon Saga

The Angels made a splash and signed Anthony Rendon to a seven-year, $245 million contract before the 2020 season. Rendon was coming off an All-Star and MVP finalist season with the Washington Nationals and was one of the top players in the game.

Unfortunately, Rendon’s career was derailed due to multiple significant injuries after signing with the Angels. He played in just 257 games across five years with the Angels and missed the entire 2025 season with a hip injury.

Rendon’s Angels tenure and MLB career are likely over after the team restructured the final year of his contract. Although he’ll remain on the roster, the 35-year-old is expected to miss the entire 2026 season as he continues to rehab at home.

Angels Should Sign Eugenio Suárez to Replace Anthony Rendon

The Angels are trying to break mediocrity. Despite having one of the most talented players baseball has ever seen in Mike Trout, the Angels haven’t made the playoffs since 2014 and haven’t had a winning season since 2015.

The Angels saw their win total increase from 63 wins in 2024 to 72 in 2025. The team still finished in last place in the AL West for the second consecutive season, 18 games back of the Seattle Mariners.

It’d be a crime for the Angels not to do everything in their power to assemble a playoff-caliber team while Trout is still on the roster. He may not be the same player he used to be, but he’s still good enough to help you win a World Series.

The Angels made a few additions this offseason, particularly to the pitching staff, but adding a player like Suárez to the lineup could pay big dividends. The Angels had the fourth-most home runs (226) in the majors in 2025, so adding a home run threat like Suárez to the mix would make the lineup much more dangerous.

Suárez isn’t the best defensive third baseman at this stage of his career, and he’s going to strike out a lot, but his power is what makes him an intriguing option. The 34-year-old hit 49 home runs in 2025 and averages 32 per year across his 12-year career.

The Angels desperately need an answer at third base. Denzer Guzmán, who hit .190 with 22 strikeouts in 13 games with the Angels in 2025 and is a career .241 hitter in the minor leagues, is listed as the top third baseman on the Angels’ depth chart, per MLB.com.

Eugenio Suárez Career Stats

Suárez is a .246 hitter with 325 home runs and 949 RBIs across his 12-year career. The two-time All-Star spent time between the Arizona Diamondbacks and Mariners in 2025, where he slashed .228/.298/.526 with a .824 OPS, 28 doubles, 49 home runs, and a career-high 118 RBIs in 159 games.

Suárez led the AL twice in strikeouts and the majors once. He had a -0.4 dWAR in 2025 and owns a -1.1 clip for his career.
