Cardinals want major stadium upgrades, potentially will ‘piggyback’ on bill aimed at keeping Chiefs & Royals

  • January 21, 2026

ST. LOUIS, Mo. (First Alert 4) – Cardinals team President Bill DeWitt III says the team isn’t going anywhere, but at some point soon major renovations will need to happen at Busch Stadium, and a new state law opens the door for Missouri taxpayers to help pay for it.

“We’re committed to this building, this location, this city,” DeWitt III said.

DeWitt III made his intentions clear during the Winter Warm-Up over the weekend. The Cardinals plan on being in St. Louis long-term, but their iconic stadium needs fixes.

“Dealing with a stadium that’s 20 years old,” said DeWitt.

So, he said multifaceted renovations are likely coming soon.

While it’s not yet clear what those stadium changes will look like, other teams in Major League Baseball have recently made plans for bigger video boards, improved concessions and infrastructure upgrades.

The news comes after Missouri legislators passed a bill last year that allows up to 50 percent of state funding for stadium upgrades, intended to keep the Royals and Chiefs in Missouri.

“But that we might be able to piggyback on as well,” said DeWitt.

And while the Chiefs are leaving for Kansas and the Royals’ situation remains unclear, nothing in the bill excludes the Cardinals, as it applies to Missouri professional sports teams.

Down the road from Busch Stadium at Tin Roof, management likes the idea of something that could lure more fans downtown.

“Well, anything that can bring people to downtown St Louis is a blessing,” said Larry Reed.

Tin Roof St. Louis general manager Larry Reed cited bars like nearby Wheelhouse closing recently.

Cardinals attendance issues haven’t helped, with the team falling from second in attendance to 19th in Major League Baseball in just a three-year period.

That has led Reed to get creative in bringing in customers.

“We’ve got to try and pick up the slack, if people aren’t going downtown for Cards games, get ‘em to come downtown for Tin Roof,” said Reed.

But he’s hoping stadium changes lead to long-term success.

“As much foot traffic as possible is the best case scenario,” said Reed.

In terms of a timeline, DeWitt said they’re likely going to wait until after the Royals make their decision on their stadium project, and then the Cardinals will move forward with their own renovations.
