The National Weather Service for Dallas-Fort Worth has issued a winter storm watch during a busy sports weekend in the Metroplex.

Snow, ice and freezing temperatures are expected throughout North Texas starting Friday afternoon and through the weekend.

With inclement weather expected, some sporting events in Dallas-Fort Worth have been canceled.

High school basketball

With snow expected in the Dallas area on Saturday and with the forecast calling for a chance of freezing rain and icy conditions on Friday night, many schools around D-FW are moving their basketball and soccer games from Friday to Thursday.

A UIL rule change allows teams to move their games up a day because of inclement weather.

Mavericks vs. Lakers, 7:30 p.m. Saturday

The Mavericks plan to play Saturday’s home game against Luka Doncic and the Los Angeles Lakers. The Lakers face the Clippers in Los Angeles on Thursday night before Saturday’s game. The Mavericks are already in town, as they host the Warriors on Thursday.

Rangers Fan Fest

The Texas Rangers announced Tuesday that they will cancel this year’s Fan Fest and all events that had been scheduled over the course of the weekend. In addition to Fan Fest, which was scheduled for Saturday, the Rangers had three Winter Warm Up fan engagement events scheduled on Friday and Sunday.

SMU men’s basketball vs. Florida State, 3 p.m. Saturday

SMU women’s basketball vs. Miami, 3 p.m. Sunday

SMU doesn’t expect its basketball teams to cancel or postpone their games due to weather as long as their opponents are able to make it into town. SMU says Florida State’s men’s team plans to travel into Dallas ahead of the weather Friday. While they may discourage some fans from driving if road conditions are dangerous, student fans able to walk are still encouraged to attend.

Stars

Stars vs. Blues, 7 p.m. Friday

The Dallas Stars and NHL are monitoring winter weather set to hit Dallas overnight Friday. The Stars say any postponement or cancellation would ultimately be decided by the league and that they don’t anticipate their game with the Blues to be moved. The Stars play in Columbus Thursday night, but both teams are expected to travel to Dallas ahead of any weather hitting. The game would take place as long as the teams and officials are in town.
