MOREHEAD CITY, N.C. (WITN) – A college in eastern Carolina has found its first-ever head baseball coach.
Blake Herring of Snow Hill is joining Carteret Community College after ten years as head coach for the Hurricanes at Louisburg College, where he built one of Region 10’s competitive baseball programs.
His team earned several Region 10 awards, including the Player of the Year award. Under Herring’s guidance, outfielder Trendon Craig was selected in the MLB draft in 2022.
“The interview committee sought a leader who could build not only a competitive team, but also a positive, supportive environment where student-athletes grow as individuals while pursuing an education that strengthens their long-term opportunities in life,” said college president Dr. Tracy Mancini.
Herring also served as the pitching coach at Louisburg for four years, with a pitcher getting drafted in the fourth round by the Chicago Cubs.
Before his coaching career, Herring was an All-State athlete at Greene Central High School and played at Campbell University.
“Coach Herring is an incredible baseball coach, but he’s also the perfect individual to coach at the junior college level because of his ability to turn his players into men away from the field,” said Seth Johnson, MLB pitcher for the Philadelphia Phillies.
