In the darkest hours of the night, the New York Mets just made another move, and much like every other thing that’s happened over the offseason, I’m annoyed about it.
New York acquired Luis Robert Jr. from the White Sox and sending Luisangel Acuña and pitching prospect Truman Pauley to Chicago. The Mets are also taking on Robert’s full $20 million salary for 2026, and his deal includes a $20 million club option for 2027 with a $2 million buyout.
Mets acquire Luis Robert Jr from White Sox
This is the classic “change of scenery” gamble, and you can see why the Mets talked themselves into it. Robert is still a legit center fielder defensively, he can run, and the upside is real if the bat wakes back up.
In 2023, he looked like the guy who was about to become a full-blown star: 38 homers, 80 RBIs, 20 steals, .857 OPS but has regressed since then while battling injuries. 2024 and 2025 were rough. Last year he hit .223/.297/.364 with 14 homers in 110 games, so the production doesn’t match the hype or the price tag.
The Mets are so far over the luxury tax line that Robert’s $20 million salary effectively costs them about $42 million once penalties are baked in.
Honestly, it makes sense. Unlike here in Philadelphia, and it pains me to even say this, but the New York Mets want to win baseball games.
They lost a couple key players and now the organization is going out there and signing players that could make their team better.
They are acting like a team that’s aggressively trying to win the NL East right now and even while they missed on some bigger swings, they pivoted to a high-variance move that at least gives them a real center field answer with legit upside. The floor is elite defense and speed. The ceiling is a nightmare if the bat returns and he starts punishing mistakes again.
I honestly hate how pissed I am at the Phillies right now.
That’s why it’s going to sting in Philly. Not because Luis Robert Jr. is a guaranteed monster, but because the Mets are clearly still hunting upgrades while the Phillies keep handing out “we are content with our roster” quotes and calling the offseason finished.
It also stings because say whatever you want about Luis Robert Jr, he’s still better than anyone on the Phillies roster in the outfield. I have zero confidence in Adolis Garcia, Nick Castellanos is being run out of town, and Dave Dombrowski is trying to sell fans on a Brandon Marsh and Otto Kemp platoon in left field. What a disaster.
how john middleton allows this to happen is absolutely insane. the phillies are closing their own window after four years and being smug assholes about it. not a good look. hope it works out. https://t.co/mtxgfCqyAv
