The Philadelphia Phillies agreed to terms with veteran relief pitcher Tim Mayza, giving him a minor league deal with a spring training invite on Thursday, bringing back a familiar face to deepen the bullpen.

A Familiar Face Returns to Philadelphia

Overall, the 34-year-old has gone 20-9 with a 3.87 ERA  and 319 strikeouts in 382 relief appearances with four different teams. In addition to Philadelphia,  Mayza has pitched for the Toronto Blue Jays (2017-19; 21-24), New York Yankees (2024), and the Pirates (2025).

Mayza will add another veteran arm to a bullpen that is pretty deep with Johan Duran, Brad Keller, and Jose Alvarado giving Philadelphia three talented arms at the back end.

Analyzing Mayza’s Role in a Crowded Bullpen

Lefty Tanner Banks and righty Orion Kerkering also add depth with three new names who will be in the mix in Clearwater: Jonathan Bowlan, acquired in the trade for Matt Straham.  Lefty Kyle Backhus comes over in a trade with Arizona, and another veteran, Zach Pop, should compete for a spot in the Phillies pen.

Bringing another veteran like Mayza to the mix should set up for good competition in Clearwater for some of the final slots in the Phillies bullpen.

Mayza is one of 27 players to attend major league spring training as non-roster invitees.
