After suffering the ignominy of losing to the Rockies on Friday night, the Yankees seemed to take that personally on Saturday. While it took a little while for them to get going, the offense put up a 10-run fifth inning to take the lead an ensure that they had a much better 13-1 win in the second game of the series.
Elsewhere, there was plenty of other action around baseball, so let’s check in on it with today’s Rivalry Roundup.
Houston Astros (27-25) 2, Seattle Mariners (29-22) 1
The Astros did not manage to score after putting up two runs in the bottom of the first. As it turns out, that didn’t matter as Framber Valdez and their bullpen led Houston to a win over the Mariners.
Houston got a bit lucky to notch their two runs, as Mariners’ pitcher Bryan Woo and then second baseman Leo Rivas committed errors on back-to-back plays, both of which allowed the Astros to score a run. In total, the Astros recorded 11 hits on the day, but they managed to go 0-for-8 with runners in scoring position and strand eight on base. Luckily for them, that didn’t come back to haunt Houston.
Following the errors, the Mariners answered right back after in the top of the second as Randy Arozarena scored on a grounder, having led off the inning with a triple. However, Valdez and Astros’ pitching went to work after that. Valdez ended up going six innings, only allowing three runners to get into scoring position, with two of them having to steal their way there. After him, the Astros’ bullpen combined to throw the last three innings, allowing just one single and a walk in that time. Houston now trails Seattle by 2.5 games in the AL West, hoping to run the M’s down in a hurry just like they did early last year.
Cleveland Guardians (29-22) 7, Detroit Tigers (33-20) 5 (10 innings)
After rallying to tie the game in the eighth inning, the Guardians got the better of a wild 10th inning to down the Tigers.
The Tigers started the game hot, scoring three runs in the first inning, and could’ve had even more, as Matt Vierling was through out on a two-RBI single, trying to stretch it into a double. However, they then didn’t score for the next eight innings, and other than leaving the bases loaded in the third, didn’t threaten much.
Cleveland began to slowly work their way back into the game, with Bo Naylor homering and José RamÃrez driving home a run with a single in the second inning. After that though, it wasn’t until the eighth until the Guardians fully completed their comeback. RamÃrez just evaded the tag at home, scoring on a grounder to send the game to extra innings.
Once there, Kyle Manzardo got the Guardians started in the top of the inning, leading it off with a double to score the auto-runner. Then following a Carlos Santana walk, Angel MartÃnez hit another run-scoring double. Adding in a sacrifice fly and another RBI hit, Cleveland put up a four-spot in the inning, taking a seemingly commanding lead.
While Emmanuel Clase started the inning with an out, he then hit a batter and allowed two runners to score by giving up a double to Gleyber Torres. With the tying run now coming to the plate, Clase then settled down and got the next two outs to prevent things from getting truly nuts. Cleveland and Minnesota both trail Detroit by three games in the AL Central race.
Other Games
Minnesota Twins (29-22) 5, Kansas City Royals (28-25) 4: The Twins continued their hot play and won via walk-off for a second straight day, thanks to Brooks Lee’s game-winning single. The Royals had a 4-0 lead after the top of the fifth, but Minnesota chipped away at that over the next couple innings, as their bullpen held KC in check ahead of Lee’s heroics.
Boston Red Sox (27-26) 6, Baltimore Orioles (16-34) 5 (10 innings) – Game 1: Despite scoring two runs in the first and holding a 5-2 lead at one point, the Orioles couldn’t hang on in the opener of a doubleheader against the Red Sox. Having trailed for a good chunk of the game, Boston rallied, scoring three runs over the fifth and sixth innings to tie the game up. It stayed that way until the surging Rafael Devers bounced through a game-winning single in the bottom of the 10th.
Baltimore Orioles (17-34) 2, Boston Red Sox (27-27) 1 – Game 2: In the second game of the day from Fenway, a pitcher’s duel broke out as starters Lucas Giolito and Trevor Rogers (yes, the 2024 Trade Deadline bust who had been demoted) posted scoreless outings of 7 and 6.1 innings respectively. It wasn’t until an eighth inning RBI single from Ryan O’Hearn that the deadlock was broken. The O’s picked up another run in the ninth thanks a Dylan Carlson double, and that ended up being important, as the Red Sox scored one run and put the tying run on base in the bottom of the ninth.
Also of note for Boston: one of their top prospects has now joined them. With Alex Bregman hitting the IL due to a quad strain, former No. 4 overall pick Marcelo Mayer is now in the majors. He went 0-for-4 in his MLB debut during the second game.
The Boston Red Sox are calling up infielder Marcelo Mayer, one of the top prospects in baseball, sources tell ESPN. With Alex Bregman injured, Boston needs infield help, and the 22-year-old Mayer — who’s hitting .271/.347/.471 at Triple-A — will get the first shot at his ABs.
