St. Louis Cardinals star second baseman Brendan Donovan

As the MLB offseason continues to wind down, the St. Louis Cardinals have been talked about a lot in the rumor mill with second baseman Brendan Donovan being the subject of many different trade rumors.

Donovan has been a topic of conversation all offseason long. Plenty of teams with infield needs have been linked to potentially pursuing a trade for him.

While it’s possible that the Cardinals could consider trading him, a new update has been provided about his standing with the team.

According to a report from Katie Woo of The Athletic, St. Louis would have to be blown away by a trade offer in order to move on from Donovan.

“The Cardinals do not feel the need to trade [Brendan] Donovan, and they will only do so if they are blown away by an offer,” Woo said.

St. Louis Cardinals Have Been Connected to Multiple Teams for Donovan

Quite a few different potential trade destinations have been suggested for Donovan. There are still a handful of those teams who could use help before the start of the 2026 MLB season.

One of those teams is the Boston Red Sox. After losing Alex Bregman to the Chicago Cubs in MLB free agency, the Red Sox could use some infield help. Donovan would make sense as a potential target for them.

Another team to watch could be the San Francisco Giants. So far this offseason, the Giants have been quite. However, they could use a piece like Donovan as well.

Yet another team to keep an eye on could be the Seattle Mariners. Their offseason has not gone extremely well and pulling off a trade for Donovan could help them keep pace in the American League race.

Should the Cardinals choose to place Donovan on the open trade block, they would receive a lot of calls with interest in acquiring him. That being said, they’re not going to trade him just to make a move.

What Does Brendan Donovan Bring to the Diamond?

Donovan is an excellent defensive second baseman. He won a Gold Glove award during the 2022 season and has always been consistent defensively.

At the plate, he’s a more than capable player who can bring good production to the lineup.

Last season with St. Louis, the 29-year-old infielder played in 118 games. He hit 10 home runs to go along with 50 RBI and a slash line of .287/.353/.422. In 2024, he hit 14 home runs, drove in 73 RBI, and slashed .278/.342/.417 in 153 games.

He’s not going to bring a lot of power to a team’s offense. Despite that fact, he’s good at getting on base and he’s consistent. Those qualities are extremely valuable.

Expect to continue hearing rumors about Donovan in the coming days and weeks. St. Louis could still decide to trade him if the right offer presents itself, but this new report makes it clear that the Cardinals are more than comfortable having him on the roster this season.
