Griffin Jax of the Minnesota Twins could make an intriguing trade candidate for the Dodgers.
The New York Yankees might be done adding free agents after signing Cody Bellinger, but that doesn’t mean they can’t make improvements to their roster in other ways. Aside from signing Bellinger, New York has brought back players like Ryan Yarborough, Paul Blackburn, and Amed Rosario. The Yankees have lost a lot of bullpen production with the departures of Luke Weaver, Devin Williams, and Mark Leiter Jr.
Considering they didn’t sign a high-profile free agent reliever, there aren’t many options available in the open market, but New York could consider making a trade for an impact arm to solidify the overall roster. Some of manager Aaron Boone’s bullpen options at this moment include David Bednar, Camilo Doval, Fernando Cruz, and Tim Hill, which means there is room for another leverage reliever, and a good trade target, according to CBS Sports writer Mike Axisa, is Tampa Bay Rays reliever Griffin Jax.

Should the Yankees Trade for Griffin Jax?
With the bullpen options listed, it’s fair to say that the Yankees can afford another leverage pitcher, especially after losing their top two options in Weaver and Williams.
In a recent article by CBS Sports, writer Mike Axisa outlines three things the Yankees can still do this offseason, and one of those things is to bring in a reliever or two, and then Axisa mentions heading to the trade market to pull that off:

“To get a real needle-mover, someone they can count on in the game’s biggest situations, the Yankees may have to venture out into the trade market. Possible targets include righty Griffin Jax (Tampa Bay Rays) and lefty JoJo Romero (St. Louis Cardinals).”
So, would Griffin Jax be a reliever worth obtaining?

Griffin Jax Fit with the Yankees
Griffin Jax was part of the Twins firesale last July, and it was the Rays who ended up swooping in to get him.
For Jax’s career, he has a 4.04 ERA over 356.2 total innings. In 2025, he boasted a 4.23 ERA with the Twins and Rays, and recorded 99 strikeouts in 66 innings, so his arsenal is dominant, but he could work on control.
Jax’s K/9 sat at 13.5 in 2025, which is phenomenal for a reliever.
2024 was Griffin Jax’s best season as a pro. He posted a 2.03 ERA with the Twins over 72 total appearances.
While the Yankees may not go out and spend much more in free agency, as they are already way over the CBT luxury threshold, a trade is not off the board as a possibility.
