Milwaukee Brewers star pitcher Freddy Peralta
Wednesday night featured another Jeff Passan bomb, and a good one for New York Mets fans. The ESPN reporter broke the news that the Mets are trading for Milwaukee Brewers starter Freddy Peralta, which is a massive offseason deal. New York is sending top prospects Jett Williams and Brandon Sproat to Milwaukee, and there’s one more pitcher involved in the deal. Tobias Myers is also going to Queens.
The Mets get their much-needed starting pitcher, and the New York MLB team from Queens has been on fire over the last week or so in terms of offseason moves. Peralta is coming off a phenomenal 2025 campaign, where he posted a 2.70 ERA over 176.2 innings and recorded 204 strikeouts. The 2025 campaign was so kind to Freddy Peralta that he finished fifth in NL CY Young voting. The Mets acquired centerfielder Luis Robert Jr. just last night, and signed Bo Bichette late last week.

Mets to Acquire Freddy Peralta
Of all the offseason moves made by any MLB team this offseason, this might be the most impactful. Owner Steve Cohen’s cryptic “let me know when you see smoke” tweet has paid off so far for the Queens faithful, and the Mets might have to be considered the favorite to win the National League East at this juncture.

While it’s a large haul to give up in terms of prospect capital, Brandon Sproat had been the subject of trade rumors ever since Freddy Peralta’s name became available. And Peralta became available due to the Brewers potentially not being able to meet his contract demands past 2026. He’s set to get paid $8 million this season, and the Mets might even want to consider locking him up long term while they are at it.
Williams is a 2B/SS prospect, and Brandon Sproat is a right-handed pitcher. Both are top-five prospects in the Mets organization.

How Did the Mets Pull off the trade for Freddy Peralta?
The rumors of Freddy Peralta potentially being traded started back in July, as it became clear that his $8 million option would be exercised for the 2026 season, and then he would become a free agent.
The Brewers have done deals like this in the past, where they trade away their top stars before having to pay them, and that is exactly this situation with the Peralta trade.
It wouldn’t shock anyone if Brandon Sproat and Jett Williams become really solid MLB players in the future, but New York did the smart thing and traded for a superstar ace instead of having to pay $15-20 million AAV to a player like Zac Gallen or Chris Bassitt.
David Stearns also just spoke today at Bo Bichette’s introductory press conference about the importance of adding a starter. This is probably the biggest trade that will happen this hot stove season, and it’s the Mets who might have just won the offseason.
The Mets were also very clear about heading to the trade market, and they do so in the biggest way possible.
