The New York Mets acquired star pitcher Freddy Peralta in a trade with the Milwaukee Brewers on Wednesday night, according to ESPN’s Jeff Passan.
The Brewers received pitcher Brandon Sproat and infielder Jett Williams in the swap, per Jon Heyman of the New York Post. Right-hander Tobias Myers is also headed to New York.
Williams and Sproat are the No. 3 and No. 5 prospects in the Mets’ farm system, respectively (via MLB.com).
Mets owner Steve Cohen and franchise legend Jose Reyes reacted to the news:
New York’s interest in Peralta doesn’t come as a complete shock, as The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal and Will Sammon reported Dec. 10 that the Mets were among the teams targeting the right-hander.
His $8 million contract option for the 2026 season was picked up by Milwaukee on Nov. 3, although Andy McCullough of The Athletic previously reported that the Brewers were expected to field trade offers for him.
With Peralta off the trade market, there are still several other starting pitchers that could experience a change of scenery. Tarik Skubal, Sandy Alcantara and Luis Severino are among the potential trade candidates.
Peralta spent each of the first eight years of his MLB career in Milwaukee, posting a 3.59 ERA and earning two All-Star nods.
He’s coming off a breakout 2025 campaign, compiling a 17-6 record in 33 starts to go along with a 2.70 ERA and 1.075 WHIP. His 17 victories were the most in the National League.
Peralta also racked up 204 strikeouts compared to 66 walks in 176.2 innings of work, marking the third consecutive year in which he amassed at least 200 strikeouts.
He finished No. 5 in NL Cy Young Award voting for his efforts in 2025.
Peralta will headline a Mets rotation that also includes Nolan McLean, Kodai Senga, David Peterson and Sean Manaea.
New York is looking to bounce back from a disappointing 2025 season in which it narrowly missed the postseason with a record of 83-79.
