Josh Bell is bringing his power and production to the Minnesota Twins. The durable and spirited veteran switch-hitter signed a 1-year, $7 million deal in December, as reported first by Jeff Passan. Included is a mutual option for 2027.
Bolster the Lineup
Bell has been a reliable and steady middle-of-the-order power threat and will be starting season 11. He has 193 career homers and 676 RBIs. He is expected to provide at least 20+ home runs and 75 to 80 RBIs. That will certainly bolster a Twins lineup. Last season, the Twins’ first basemen were among the least productive with a combined .240 average and a combined OPS of just .678. That ranked them 25th out of the 30 teams.
Brings Durability
Bell brings his durability to the Twins. He has appeared in at least 140 games in every full season of his career. That will bring much-needed stability to this lineup. Being a switch-hitter also allows flexibility in the lineup. His power is real, and his plate discipline is bona fide and genuine. Although he is better as a left-handed hitter, he can be streaky from the right side as well.
Veteran Leadership
Josh Bell is bringing power and production while also providing his experience and veteran leadership to a team with several young hitters. This is his seventh team. At all his previous stops, he was a positive player and a good role model. He is widely considered an optimistic presence in the clubhouse. Bell is also a favorite among teammates and even the coaching staffs across the various teams he has played for.
Mentor
Despite playing for many teams, he is known for adapting and fitting in immediately. Look for him to serve as a mentor for the younger players. Known for his commitment and enthusiasm to the game, his work ethic and moral beliefs are qualities the Twins need.
Young Infield
The Twins will be playing a young infield around Bell. They need a first baseman who can help that young infield with errant throws and the ability to dig out the low throws sure to come his way. Bell can do that while mentoring his colleagues and providing leadership that demands the players be at their best.
Underrated Signing
This is not the kind of signing that attracts much attention, but it could turn out to be a very underrated move, especially if Bell plays well and inspires those around him to do the same. And, with Bell seen as the primary first baseman, the Twins will have some flexibility. For example, they can rotate players at the DH spot. The Twins could use a regular position player at DH to provide some needed rest from playing in the field.
Durability Provides Options
It is hard to predict how the Twins might do this season. Bell certainly gives them a much-needed boost offensively. And, his signing provides options should they be needed. That is, if the Twins’ season goes in a negative direction, Bell’s durability could make him a strong trade candidate. If, however, the Twins are ready for action and playing well, Bell provides power, stability, and leadership to a young lineup that might surprise everyone and stay competitive all season. Bell—and the Twins—might find themselves contending for a playoff spot late into the season.
