Bleacher Report’s Tim Kelly named the New York Mets and New York Yankees as the top potential landing spots for Athletics All-Star starting pitcher Luis Severino at the 2026 trade deadline.
The right-hander has pitched for both the Yankees and the Mets during his career, earning both of his All-Star selections with the Yankees in 2017 and 2018.
“Severino has previously had success pitching for both the Yankees and Mets, so they feel like early favorites to land him via trade in the summer,” Kelly wrote.
Would the Athletics Trade Luis Severino?
Severino, who will turn 32 by the beginning of the season, spent the 2025 season with the Athletics after signing what was the largest contract in franchise history, but underperformed in his first season in the AL West.
He openly spoke about disliking pitching in the A’s’ temporary home in Sacramento, and his numbers at Sutter Health Park tell the whole story. He had a 2-9 record at home, posting a 6.01 ERA over 15 starts.
““Because we play in a big-league stadium on the road,” Severino said when asked about the disparity between his home and road splits in June.
“We don’t have that at home right now. It’s not the same. It’s not the same atmosphere. We don’t have a lot of fans. Our clubhouse is in left field. So, when we play day games, we have to just be in the sun. There’s no air conditioning there, too. It’s really tough.”

Following Severino’s comments, a report from USA Today’s Bob Nightengale revealed the A’s were open to trading the All-Star.
The A’s have one of the most exciting, young lineups in MLB, but their ability to contend largely depends on the pitching staff’s performances. If they find themselves out of the race come the trade deadline, they could very well part with Severino.
Do the Yankees and Mets need Luis Severino?
If there’s one thing every team in MLB wants too much of, it’s starting pitching.
Both the Yankees and Mets have plenty of starting arms vying for a spot, but the addition of a two-time All-Star in the middle of the rotation will provide both postseason contenders with a huge boost, especially with the talent they already have.

In addition to their needs, both teams have a multitude of young players and solid prospects which would serve as more than enough of a return for the rebuilding A’s.
