Yelich came to close to being out on his 3-run homer, here’s his story
Christian Yelich came to close to being out on his 3-run homer against the Pittsburgh Pirates on Thursday May 22, 2025, during an 8-5 Brewers win.
PITTSBURGH – The Milwaukee Brewers will try for a series split as they play the Pittsburgh Pirates for the fourth and final time on Sunday afternoon, May 25, at PNC Park.
Rookie right-hander Logan Henderson (3-0, 1.69) takes the mound for the Brewers as he attempts to become the first pitcher to win his first four major-league starts since Chase Anderson in 2014.
LHP Bailey Falter (3-3, 3.50) will counter for the Pirates.
The rookie is in line for the victory, until…
With his pitch count climbing, Henderson needed to get through the fifth in order to qualify for the victory.
He did just that, working around a two-out walk by getting Joey Bart looking at a called third. The rookie let out a yell of excitement as he left the mound – and understandably so.
In 89 pitches, allowed five hits and a run, walked a batter and struck out six.
Nick Mears replaced Henderson and was greeted by an Alexander Canario triple off the wall in left-center that Isaac Collins didn’t seem to get a good read on and allowed the ball to bounce off the top of the wall.
Adam Frazier singled him in. Then after a wild pitch, Tommy Pham singled in Frazier to tie it, ending Henderson’s bid for his fourth win in his first four major-league starts.
Jared Koenig took over for Mears and recorded the final two outs.
Oneil Cruz gets one run back
Oneil Cruz popped a leadoff homer off Henderson in the third to make it 3-1. It was his third of the series.
But it wasn’t just any homer. This one left the ballpark at 122.9 mph, making it the hardest-hit homer ever in the Statcast era (2015), breaking Giancarlo Stanton’s old mark of 121.7. It was also the 83rd homer to end up in the Allegheny River (it bounced).
Quite the titanic blast.
Logan Henderson has to work in the second
Consecutive one-out singles put two on for Pittsburgh in the second.
The first, by Canario, should have twice been erased when Henderson made great pickoff moves only to see Brice Turang unable to cleanly catch the ball each time.
Eventually the Pirates loaded the bases only to have Jackson Chourio rob Jared Triolo of what would have been a two-run bloop single to center with a diving grab.
A big first inning for the Brewers
Jackson Chourio has drawn a walk in three straight games, and it was the leadoff free pass he earned that led to the game’s first run as he went to third on a Christian Yelich single and tagged and scored on a Rhys Hoskins sacrifice fly to right.
Isaac Collins followed by drawing a two-out walk, then Sal Frelick singled to center. Cruz, who killed Milwaukee with his bat each of the previous two games, then did a huge favor by uncorking one of the worst throws home you will ever see.
Yelich would have already scored, but it was Collins that also came home all the way from first to give the Brewers the quick 3-0 lead.
