The Chicago White Sox have a young roster with a lot of talent coming up the minor league pipeline in the next handful of years. There is a lot of talent throughout the minors and the White Sox have done a great job of identifying them. ESPN released its top 100 prospects entering the 2026 MLB season, and one Chicago player finished right at the 100th spot. Let’s take a closer look at who it is and what they had to say about him.

ESPN’s Kiley McDaniel released an article on Tuesday discussing the top 100 prospects across baseball and rounding out the list was White Sox’s shortstop Billy Carlson. Below is what the article said about Carlson’s ability after mentioning he is an outstanding defender with a plus-plus arm who needs to improve at the plate:

“Carlson has a huge arm — some scouts put it at an 80 — that allowed him to pitch in the mid-90s on the mound as an amateur. He’s a roughly average runner in games but is a plus defender at shortstop. Carlson has above-average power potential and hit pretty well on the summer showcase circuit, but he was old for his high school class (a big negative for long-term projection) and scouts differed on how much he needs to tweak his swing to hit for average against high-level pro arms. Given his tools, Carlson will rise on this list if he hits well in 2026.”

Carlson was selected with the 10th overall pick in the 2025 MLB Draft out of high school, meaning there is a lot of growth that can happen between now and him potentially making the big leagues. With prospects like the organization’s top-ranked prospect, Caleb Bonemer, at shortstop, it will be intriguing to see if he will need to switch off shortstop to another position to remain with the White Sox in the future. He has a lot of raw tools, but will need to be better at the plate to have a bright future in the majors in a few year’s time.
