It’s no secret that the Pittsburgh Pirates have one of the best farm systems in baseball. Led by MLB’s top prospect, Konnor Griffin, the Pirates are teeming with young talent.

Griffin was one of four Pittsburgh prospects in Keith Law’s updated top 100 list for The Athletic (subscription required) this week. However, the Pirates just missed Tier 1 of his new farm system rankings. They’re at the top of Tier 2 at No. 4 overall, behind only the Milwaukee Brewers, Los Angeles Dodgers and Seattle Mariners.

“They’ve got the No. 1 prospect in the sport — a guy who’s a No. 1 for the ages, I think — and a pair of potential front-line starters in the system to go with Paul Skenes, plus a long list of position-player prospects who look like they’re really going to hit,” Law wrote. “Some have power, some have on-base skills, some really don’t do much beyond putting the ball in play, but this isn’t the Pirates’ system of five or 10 years ago with a bunch of punch-and-judy hitters and back-end starters. There’s ceiling here — like, Sistine Chapel kind of ceiling. Let’s hope there isn’t a Last Judgment on the outfield walls.”

That’s great news for Pittsburgh, which upgraded its MLB roster this offseason as well.

Law believes Griffin has Mike Trout potential, which would be franchise-altering if true. He also put Bubba Chandler, Edward Florentino and Seth Hernandez in his top 100.

For the first time in a while, both the present and future are exciting for the Pirates at the same time.
