“Do the Dodgers need Donovan? Of course not. They’ve got Tommy Edman, Hyeseong Kim, Miguel Rojas and Alex Freeland as options at second base,” Miller wrote. “But they don’t have a sure thing there, which is what Donovan would be in their quest for a third consecutive World Series. They also have a preposterous surplus of outfielders at this point and could flip one of their top prospects to St. Louis without even feeling the loss.”
Dodgers Roster Appears ‘Completely Set’
Donovan would be an upgrade at second base for the Dodgers, but it’s certainly not a need. Los Angeles doesn’t really have a weakness at this point.
Adding Donovan may just end up being overkill. The Athletic’s Fabian Ardaya doesn’t see a red flag at any position for the Dodgers.
“The Los Angeles Dodgers appear to be done with the majority of their winter’s work,” Ardaya wrote. “Sometimes all it takes is two swift, shocking moves to claim an offseason, as the reigning juggernaut did with the signings of Edwin Díaz and Kyle Tucker. Their roster appears completely set, with just about every contingency in place.”
Dodgers Getting Some Big-Time Players Back From Injury
Another reason why the Dodgers might be done making moves is that they have some young players they want to look at. Ardaya noted that top big-time young players are expected to return this season.
“They are expecting Gavin Stone and River Ryan back from injury,” Ardaya wrote. “Stone led the team in innings during their 2024 title season. Ryan, according to The Athletic’s Keith Law, could be the top pitching prospect in baseball if he were completely healthy. Neither is projected to start the season in the rotation, not just because of workload but because the Dodgers still have six starters they like ahead of them right now.”
Both Stone and Ryan are pitchers, so they don’t affect what’s happening at second base, but it could scare the Dodgers off from making a Tarik Skubal trade. The team is just so loaded with talent right now. It’s just going to be difficult to imagine another team slowing the dynasty down this season.
