WHEN MARTY BRENNAMAN CAME TO CINCINNATI IN 1974, MORE THAN FIVE DECADES AGO, HE HAD NO IDEA IT WOULD BECOME HOME. EVERYBODY IN OUR PROFESSION. THINKS THAT THE GRASS IS GREENER SOMEWHERE ELSE. I’M GOING TO GO TO A BIGGER MARKET. I’M GOING TO MAKE MORE MONEY. I WAS NEVER AFFECTED BY ANY OF THAT. I GREW TO LOVE THIS TOWN QUICK. HE HAD PLENTY OF OPPORTUNITIES TO LEAVE. I CAME THAT CLOSE TO GOING TO THE BOSTON RED SOX IN 1981. REALLY CLOSE. BUT AT THE END OF THE DAY. I REALIZED THAT. I DON’T I DON’T KNOW THAT I CAN BE HAPPIER SOMEWHERE ELSE THAN I AM HERE. AND ALL THE MONEY IN THE WORLD DIDN’T MAKE ANY DIFFERENCE TO ME. THE MEMORIES ARE ENDLESS. THE BIG RED MACHINE, OF COURSE, THE WORLD SERIES WIN IN 1990 WITH HIS PALS THE NASTY BOYS, BUT SHAVING HIS HAIR FOR DRAGONFLY AND KIDS WITH CANCER IS RIGHT UP THERE. THAT IS REALLY IMPACTED MY LIFE. WHAT THOSE PEOPLE DO IS BEYOND COMPREHENSION. BUT THE EXCLAMATION POINT TO HIS CAREER WILL BE COVERED IN BRONZE. A STATUE OUTSIDE THE REDS OFFICE RIGHT BETWEEN HIS TWO FRIENDS, PETE ROSE ON ONE SIDE, JOE MORGAN ON THE OTHER. IT’S REALLY GOING TO BE AN UNFORGETTABLE THING, SOMETHING THAT I NEVER DREAMED OF. I’M THE ONLY GUY THAT DIDN’T PLAY THE GAME. IT’S GOING TO HAVE A BRONZE STATUE OUT THERE. CAN I GET ONE MORE? ONE LAST. AND THIS ONE BELONGS TO THE REDS. AND THIS ONE BELONGS TO THE REDS. The statue of legendary Reds broadcaster Marty Brennaman outside Great American Ball Park has been removed for repairs after it was vandalized last year.Last October, the microphone on Brennaman’s statue outside the stadium was broken, and a 13-year-old was eventually arrested.In an update on Friday by a Reds spokesperson, the team said the statue is being repaired by sculptor Tom Tsuchiya and is expected to be ready by March 26, which is Opening Day against the Boston Red Sox.The statue of Brennaman was unveiled before a game last September, with fans present for the unveiling outside GABP.Brennaman had a lengthy career as the Reds’ broadcaster between 1974 and 2019, calling many of the Reds’ most iconic moments in franchise history.
