Despite not making any big, splashy moves, San Francisco Giants president of baseball operations Buster Posey seems largely content with the team’s offseason.
Posey discussed the San Francisco offseason, and while he made it clear that more moves are possible, he likes the look of the team.
“We’re excited. There’s definitely a lot of excitement on our end,” Posey said, per Alex Pavlovic, NBC Sports Bay Area. “A couple weeks out, we still have some balls in the air here and we’ll see how it pans out. There’s nothing guaranteed but we’ll keep working.”
San Francisco Giants Announcer Mike Krukow Wants Team to Sign Free Agent Starting Pitcher
One of the biggest question marks remaining in San Francisco is the starting rotation. The Giants signed free agents Adrian Houser and Tyler Mahle in the offseason. Barring another move, those two will slot into a rotation along with Logan Webb, Robbie Ray and (most likely) Landon Roupp.
During an interview on KNBR 680’s Murph & Marcus on Jan. 29, Krukow was asked about the Giants going after Framber Valdez.
“Well, I hope so,” Krukow said,” per Florito Maniego, NBC Sports Bay Area.”I think he’s one of the top pitchers in the game, and I like his style because he’s extremely unique. High three-quarter release, big curveball — one of the best in the game — Clayton Kershaw-type curveball. He not only gets strikeouts, but he gets ground balls.
“And he also has one of the best sinkers that gets lots of ground balls, and he’s left-handed,” Krukow added. “I mean, what’s not to like?”
The Giants have been heavily linked as a possible suitor for Valdez throughout the offseason. Zac Gallen has also been discussed as a free agent target. They’ve also been mentioned as a possible trade destination for Sandy Alcántara, the 2022 National League Cy Young Award winner who’s coming off a down year in 2025 with the Miami Marlins.
And while Posey didn’t rule out the possibility of the Giants adding one of those arms, he did speak highly of the rotation as it stands.
“We’re happy with our rotation right now,” Posey said, per Pavlovic. “Again, (look at) some of the adjustments that Houser made last year (and) we feel like Mahle is in a good place physically. You’re never going to close doors, but we feel good with the group that we have.”
There Are Other Possible Moves to Make
While the starting rotation is likely the most glaring area for possible improvement, the Giants have other areas to improve. Following the signing of Harrison Bader, which should help solidify the outfield Giants have another question at second base.
St. Louis Cardinals second baseman Brendan Donovan has been named as a possible trade candidate throughout the offseason. Following the Bader signing, Andrew Baggarly of The Athletic (subscription required) reported that the Giants “remain engaged” in trade talks for Donovan.
Dayn Perry of CBS Sports detailed why trading Donovan makes sense for the Cardinals and predicted that he’ll end up in San Francisco.
“I’ll say he goes to the Giants and gives them a needed dose of OBP and infield stability,” Perry said.
As far as when that move might occur, Perry predicted that Donovan will be traded “before camps get moving in earnest.”
