Decatur, Miss. (WTOK) – Over at East Central, the Warriors baseball team is looking to continue their success from last year, only this time, they’re looking to win it all.
Last year was another great season for the Warriors as they had a 46 and 16 campaign that included another visit to the MACCC Championship.
Moving on from their loss in the semifinals to Pearl River, the squad is looking to succeed once again with a team led by great pitching and roster depth.
Even though that team was not holding up the trophy, it was one of the best seasons ever for the black and gold.
“I think our depth is we’re much deeper than we were last year and we’re even more athletic than we were last year,” said head coach Neal Holliman. “We’ve got a lot of new faces, you know, at some special spots, but they’re capable of doing it, we feel like. So, I mean, they’ve shown that it’s a matter of can we do it on a consistent basis and are we how we’re going to handle those moments that they necessarily haven’t been in at this at this level yet.”
At East Central, they say that “everything counts,” and that mentality is exactly what this new team is striving to embody.
“Really came in the offseason, you know, building a strong relationship with the guys,” said East Central infielder Ryan Nelson. “Doing a lot of team bonding stuff, to get closer off the field and obviously that translates to the field and really trusts each other and trusting that one another will get the job done.”
“Got a lot of back-end talent from last year,” said East Central catcher Ryan Hardin. “But the freshman group that came in, it’s probably going to help us out a lot this year.”
“We should have a really good season,” said East Central infielder Jacob Wooten. “We’re looking to win the last game. We want to play as hard as we can and try to do everything correctly.”
Although some games have been postponed due to weather, as of now, the Warriors first home game will be February 5th against St. Johns River State College at 2pm.
