After dealing with the free agency of Cody Bellinger this offseason, the New York Yankees now have to look forward to Jazz Chisholm Jr. testing the market next offseason.

With Bellinger playing out the 2025 MLB season on the final year of his contract, it wouldn’t be surprising for New York to take the same approach with Chisholm. Nonetheless, the question will be whether the player wants to stay long-term in the Bronx.

On Jan. 30, Chisholm spoke with SNY about his future as spring training nears.

“I would hope it looks strong,” Chisholm said. “I love being a Yankee. For me, it’s just going out there and playing my hardest and hoping I come back again.

Since arriving with the Yankees in 2024 from the Miami Marlins, Chisholm has posted a batting average of .251 with 160 hits, 42 homers, 103 RBIs, and 103 runs scored in 176 games for New York, per StatMuse.

Nonetheless, where Chisholm will need to improve to show the Yankees’ front office to invest in a long-term contract is in the playoffs. The infielder is hitting .182 with 14 hits, three homers, three RBIs, and eight runs scored in 21 games for the Yankees in the postseason, per StatMuse.

MLB Insider Talks Jazz Chisholm Jr.’s Future in New York

FanSided’s MLB insider Robert Murray shared the latest regarding Chisholm’s future in New York this offseason. Murray believes that the infielder has shown himself to be a key player for the Yankees and someone they should look to keep.

“If I was them, I would definitely explore [a contract extension],“ Murray said during a Nov. 20 appearance on “Foul Territory.“ “He was an all-star last year. He’s a tremendous player. He’s really been a great fit in New York, and you talk to people around that team, and they love him. [Yankees general manager] Brian Cashman did not shoot down the idea of a possible extension when he was asked about it at the GM meetings or on a conference call at the GM meetings.”

Although Murray explains why the Yankees might want to extend Chisholm and keep him as part of the current core, he expects Chisholm will eventually test free agency. When that time comes, it will be up to Chisholm to decide whether to find common ground with the Yankees or head elsewhere.

“[The Yankees] typically don’t extend players before they reach free agency because Cashman prefers his players to reach the market so they can establish their values there,“ Murray added. “He could be an exception to the rule. That being said, he’s a year away from free agency.

“He had a great year this year. If he has another great year next year, he can really just turn that into a very strong contract in free agency. My guess is they poke around, see what it’s going to take. But my feel is it’s probably unlikely that he becomes a free agent after the 2026 season.”

Jazz Chisholm Jr. Excited About Yankees’ 2026 Season

Although his future in New York is uncertain, Chisholm offered encouraging words for the 2026 MLB season, as the Yankees look to return to the World Series after losing to the Toronto Blue Jays in the American League Division Series last year.

“I can’t wait to get out there,“ Chisholm added. “2026 is coming up, and I think it’s going to be a big year for the Yankees. So I think us as a team, especially knowing each other as well as we do, this is our third season together, almost half of the team. So I think it’s going to be a good year.”
