KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) – Royals fans lined up outside Kauffman Stadium in 10-degree temperatures Saturday, arriving 30 minutes before gates opened at 10 a.m. for the team’s annual fan rally.
Fans expressed confidence about the upcoming season despite the frigid conditions.
“Oh yeah, it’s going to be great. We’re going to make the playoffs for sure,” one fan said.
Another fan said every year brings excitement, but this year the team will be “really strong.”
Team leadership shares optimism
Team owner John Sherman said he was excited about the season after seeing players and fans waiting in lines in frigid temperatures.
“In fact, I looked out at the field and thought I was in Green Bay,” Sherman said.
General Manager JJ Picollo said the Royals Rally is a great event because fans can see all the players together and watch their camaraderie.
“Then, you look at the field and the snow, and it’s like, yeah, let’s get to Arizona!” Picollo said.
Players sign autographs for long lines of fans
Most of the team’s stars attended the event and signed autographs despite the long lines.
“Yeah, I love it. I was a kid getting autographs not too long ago,” said catcher Carter Jensen.
All-star pitcher Chris Bubic said he enjoys meeting fans who come out even on cold days.
“It’s always great to see the fans come out here — even on a cold day like this — I know it’s tough travelling. But it’s great to see everyone’s faces and the excitement for the season building this time of year,” Bubic said.
The team leaves for Spring Training in February.
