Proposed Mets trade sees New York deal Clay Holmes, top prospects for $300 million two-time Cy Young to create awesome 1-2 punch with Freddy Peralta originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
The New York Mets started off the offseason horribly, losing two superstars in Pete Alonso and Edwin Diaz. However, they bounced back by trading for Freddy Peralta, and signing Jorge Polanco and Bo Bichette.

However, they could make one more blockbuster move to solidify themselves as a rival to the Los Angeles Dodgers. Bleacher Report’s Zachary D. Rymer believes they can do that by making the blockbuster move of the offseason and trade for Detroit Tigers two-time Cy Young, Tarik Skubal.

The trade would look like this:
Mets get: LHP Tarik Skubal
Tigers get: RHP Clay Holmes, OF Carson Benge (MLB No. 16), RHP Jonah Tong (MLB No. 48)
“In a span of about a week earlier this month, the Mets went from being one of the big losers of the offseason to one of the obvious winners. All the same, a trade for Skubal would be meant to answer the question of whether the Mets are truly ready to take down the Dodgers. He’d be a substantial upgrade even over newcomer ace Freddy Peralta, with Nolan McLean becoming the best No. 3 starter in the NL East,” Rymer wrote.

This past season, Skubal won his second Cy Young in a row, posting a 13-6 record, a 2.21 ERA, 241 Ks, and a WHIP of 0.891 in 195 innings pitched. And add him to a rotation with a two-time All-Star in Peralta and a future superstar in McLean? The NL East would be blown wide open.
The only snag with this, as Rymer mentioned, is the Mets themselves may not be inclined to do it. They would have to give up two top prospects who have shown they are ready to compete at the MLB. Plus, this could be a rental, as Skubal is projected to get a monster contract, and the Mets may not be ready to pony up (see Pete Alonso).
Hopefully, the Mets can make this trade, and steel themselves into committing to Skubal long-term, as well as Peralta, and have themselves the best 1-2 punch in the NL East for years to come.
