In exchange, the White Sox will send pitcher Gage Ziehl to the Red Sox, according to The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal and Will Sammon.
According to the reports, the Red Sox will also send the White Sox cash to help cover Hicks’ salary for the next two seasons.
The veteran pitcher signed a four-year, $44 million contract with the San Francisco Giants prior to the 2024 season, but he has struggled badly since signing that deal, with the Giants ultimately dealing him to Boston.
In 34 combined appearances between the two teams last season, Hicks went 2-7 with a 6.95 ERA.
The White Sox will likely have hopes that Sandlin will pan out, as he’s coming off a solid season that saw him promoted to Triple-A. He went 9-6 with a 4.50 ERA in 32 appearances, 14 of which were starts, and he struck out 107 batters in 106 innings.
Ziehl, whom the White Sox acquired from the Yankees in a trade last season last season, has a career 4.12 ERA in 22 minor league appearances since he was drafted by the Chicago Cubs in 2024.
The White Sox will report to Camelback Ranch in Arizona for spring training next week, with their first spring training game set for February 20 against the Cubs.
