College baseball: Catawba cruises in opener

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. — Catawba pounded out 15 hits and beat Palm Beach Atlantic in the baseball season opener on Friday night.

Catawba didn’t hit any homers, but did have five extra-base hits. Hunter Atkins led the onslaught with three hits. Sam Hunter, Logan Dyer, Nathan Chrismon and Malachi Cloud had two each. Cloud has been touted as the fastest player in the history of the program and stole three bases in his debut.

Also debuting was starting pitcher Colt Wilkins, who transferred to Catawba after Limestone closed. Wilkins pitched five innings, struck out eight and walked three. Seth Sharpe pitched two good innings of relief.
