The San Francisco Giants have some work to do if they want to compete with the Los Angeles Dodgers in the National League West, but they are taking swings (literally) at doing just that.

A busy offseason for Buster Posey–a franchise legend and current President of Baseball Operations–continued over the weekend when news broke that San Francisco had reached a one-year, $12 million agreement with free-agent infielder Luis Arráez.

Arráez, who led the National League in hits during the 2025 season while playing for the San Diego Padres, will join a San Francisco Giants lineup that includes the likes of Rafael Devers, Willy Adames, Matt Chapman, Heliot Ramos, and recently signed slick-fielding center fielder Harrison Bader.

More on Giants 2B Luis Arraez’s fit in SF

The addition of Arráez fills a void at second base, one that Posey was looking to address as the offseason unfolded.

According to reports, Arráez was choosing his destination in free agency on the condition that he could return to playing second base, a position he has logged 359 appearances in out of 757 career games (the most of any other position).

Although Arráez can play first base, third base, or corner outfield, you can expect the San Francisco Giants and new manager Tony Vitello to pencil him in at second base to form a middle-infield duo with Adames.

By adding Arráez into the fold, the Giants have the ability to put one of–if not the best–contact bats in the league at the top of the order. The 28-year-old has led the National League in hits over the past two seasons, including 181 in 2025.

Arráez leads all active players in batting average (.317) and has walked more (230) than struck out (215) during his seven-year career.

Adding a contact bat ahead of Devers, Adames, and Chapman could provide the San Francisco Giants’ offense with a much-needed boost in 2026, although Vitello could also slot Arráez into the middle of the order, where he would have more chances at driving runs in via sacrifice hits (led all MLB with 12 in 2025).

It may be for one season, but the signing of Luis Arráez adds to a lineup that needed more contact to complement the power bats.
