Alejandro Osuna was a key part of the Rangers’ “Little Rascals” scrappy group of young players last September.
For March, he’ll be just as scrappy, but it might be more appropriate to dub him one of “Los Pequeños Traviesos,” – little rascals in Spanish. Osuna, a native of Ahome, Mexico, will play for Team Mexico in the WBC, a person with knowledge of the roster confirmed to The Dallas Morning News.
It could mean a relatively long absence for Osuna from Rangers spring training. Team Mexico is in Pool B along with Team USA, Great Britain, Italy and Brazil and begins play on March 6 in Houston. The Mexican team, managed by former Ranger Benji Gil, is considered one of the favorites along with Team USA to advance from the pool.
If the Mexican team were to advance to the finals, to be played in Miami on March 17, Osuna could miss two full weeks of Rangers spring training.

Osuna, 23, has spent the winter with Jalisco of the Mexican Winter League, where he hit .339 with an .897 OPS. Jalisco won the Mexican Winter League and is expected to play in the Caribbean World Series, which began play this weekend. Osuna is on the provisional roster for the series, but did not play in the opening game and it isn’t clear if he will participate. The Caribbean Series wraps up Saturday. Rangers position players are due in camp on Feb. 15.
Osuna slashed .212/.313/.278/.591 in 176 plate appearances with the Rangers as a rookie last year after only 39 games above Class A in the Rangers system. He did finish strong, however, slashing .297/.357/.391/.748 in September and showed significant progress.
Barring an injury, though, he would appear to have a difficult time making the Rangers’ opening day roster for 2026. Osuna, a left-handed hitter, got the bulk of his playing time in Evan Carter’s absence. If Carter is healthy and productive, he will get the left-handed at-bats in an outfield platoon and is likely to share time with either Sam Haggerty or Michael Helman.
