The Tampa Sports Authority’s discussed economic benefits versus funding challenges on the potential relocation of the Tampa Bay Rays to Tampa
TAMPA, Fla. — The Tampa Sports Authority said it will conduct an economic impact study for a possible Tampa Bay Rays stadium relocation to Tampa. Officials and residents said this is a key step in figuring out if bringing the team over the bridge makes financial sense.
Bringing the Rays to the Hillsborough Community College Dale Mabry campus could bring more visitors to Tampa. David Gesacion with For The Bay said that increased foot traffic from games and events would benefit nearby business owners, he adds that he’s already seen the impact the rays have made playing at the Steinbrenner field.
“I know St. Pete is a little bummed about the situation, but I think for the Bay area as a whole, I think it gives a new, unique opportunity. If it all goes well, it would just be 10 minutes down the street for us,” Gesacion said.
The Tampa Sports Authority will take a look at how turning this space into a mixed-use campus district with restaurants, hotels and housing could impact the community and its infrastructure.
“I was over at the Governor’s thing this morning and heard what they had to say. So I think that we’re smart with our taxpayers’ money to make sure that we’re reviewing the entire scope,” Joseph Robinson said.
“If sports wants to come, I welcome them. Just pay your own way,” Councilmember Charlie Miranda said.
This proposed project will take place in Councilmember Miranda’s district.
“If you have the money to spend $ 1.7 billion to buy something you should have the money to build your own house,” Miranda said.
He said funding is already tight.
“When you ask me to fund something for a 99-year lease, you got to draw a line somewhere,” Miranda said.
He believes the funding sources being considered to help pay for this project will impact funding for potential community needs.
“If you have a husband and wife making $25/hr will have a hard time buying a house in the City of Tampa and that’s how it is, but I’m going to give away all that money that I just talked about for what,” Miranda said.
Councilmember Miranda said all traffic isn’t good traffic.
“You can’t leave your house. What about the emergency vehicles? What about the jams for other people going to the airport?” Miranda said.
He emphasizes he is all for the Rays coming to Tampa, but it should not impact the quality of life.
“I’ve never voted for one of these because it takes the money away from the people who put it in the coffers of the city or the county or the state to do what is right for all the citizens,” Miranda added.
