Catching prospect Ethan Salas headlines 10 homegrown players among the 28 non-roster invitees who’ll join the Padres in big-league camp this month.
Salas, 19, played just 10 games at Double-A San Antonio before a stress reaction in his lower back cost him the rest of the season and the opportunity to make up for lost at-bats in offseason leagues.
Salas is the Padres’ top-ranked prospect and is No. 90 in Baseball America’s top-100, down from as high as No. 6.
Other top-30 Padres prospects, as ranked by Baseball America, who’ll participate in big league camp include left-hander Jagger Haynes (11), first baseman Romeo Sanabria (15) and right-hander Francis Peña (27). Right-hander Miguel Mendez (4), right-hander Bradgley Rodriguez (9), right-hander Garrett Hawkins (23) and outfielder Tirso Ornelas (26) are on the 40-man roster.
Additionally, 10 minor league free-agent additions headed to big-league camp have big-league experience, headlined by right-handers Triston McKenzie and Logan Gillaspie, left-hander Marco Gonzales, infielder Jose Miranda and utilityman Nick Solak.
