The Boston Red Sox have made a plethora of interesting offseason roster moves so far this winter. Ranger Suarez, Johan Oviedo, Sonny Gray, and Willson Contreras are all major additions this winter.
But after losing Alex Bregman to the Chicago Cubs, the Red Sox have needed another infielder. They’re exploring the free agent and trade market, but most recently, that’s not been the position they’ve been linked to.
According to Katie Woo and Will Sammon of The Athletic, the Red Sox are showing interest in a right-handed hitting outfielder. With that need, the Red Sox are linked to a former New York Mets and Pittsburgh Pirates outfielder as a free agent this winter.

“Along with (Randal) Grichuk, Starling Marte and Tommy Pham are among the right-handed batting outfielders remaining in free agency,” Woo and Sammon write.
Of these three outfield options, Starling Marte is the most interesting one for the Red Sox. He’s 37 years old and had the best OPS (.733) of the bunch against left-handed pitching.
Marte is coming off a 1.0 bWAR season for the Mets in 2025, where in 98 games, he had a .270 batting average with a .745 OPS.
He’s been the best hitter against left-handed pitching, which is the reason the Red Sox are interested in a right-handed hitting outfielder.

Not only is Marte a better hitter than the other two, but he’s also been the better player in his MLB career. He’s put up a .781 OPS in his 14-year MLB career, with 39.3 bWAR, 1,639 hits, 163 home runs, and an MLB-best (among active players) 55 triples.
Marte would be a nice addition for the Red Sox as a purely depth addition. While adding another outfielder to an already crowded room with Jarren Duran, Wilyer Abreu, Ceddane Rafaela, and Roman Anthony might not make sense, a depth righty hitter wouldn’t be bad.
Rob Refsnyder has such a role in 2025, and he was a solid contributor for the Red Sox. He’s now with the Seattle Mariners, so the need for a righty-hitting outfielder, at least as depth, is real.
Marte is linked to the Red Sox for such a possible free agent pickup, and is a very realistic option for Boston and Craig Breslow this winter.
