HEREFORD, Texas (KFDA) – Ethan Subealdea from Hereford has signed to play baseball at Hesston College in Kansas.
“I’ve been on the varsity team for all four years since my freshman year and it’s been a pleasure to play with all these guys,” Subealdea said. “It has definitely been a challenge and it’s been a great help just throughout my baseball career.”
Leadership development
Subealdea said playing with older teammates as a freshman showed him what senior leadership looks like.
“Playing with some of the guys my freshman year just helped me see what a senior role model is supposed to be, and now I’m the senior filling the shoes for these younger guys, trying to help them up and get them up to the speed of the game,” he said.
The experience at Hereford helped prepare him for college, Subealdea said.
“It’s just helped me get through all these challenges and life goals throughout life,” he said.
Choosing Hesston
Subealdea said Hesston College felt familiar when he visited.
“Honestly, it was just like a home away from home,” he said. “Hereford’s a little small town and nobody really knows about it. I feel like when I went over there, it was just the same kind of feel. It was a small school, it was a very fun environment. Everybody rallied around them, and it just seemed like a very home place.”
Subealdea said the leadership and work ethic he developed at Hereford will help him succeed in college athletics and academics.
“I think one of the biggest things is just have the leadership and work ethic to get things done in and out of the classroom. In the classroom especially because being an athletic student, being in sports and athletic program, it’s hard to get through all that,” he said.
Coach’s perspective
Hereford head baseball coach Grant Davis praised Subealdea’s versatility and character.
“Not only is Hesston going to be getting a great baseball player, he’s done everything we’ve asked him to do,” Davis said. “He’s one of those kids that there’s a lot of times that I just walk in that day and go ‘Hey, dude, I need you to do this’. And he goes, ‘Yes, sir’.”
Davis said Subealdea has played multiple positions for the team.
“He may be in the outfield, he may play infield, he’s going to play catcher. ‘Hey dude, you got to pitch today. Yes, sir’,” Davis said. “Not only does it matter to him, but it also matters the fact that he’s going to try to take care of his teammates and do everything he can to try to help us be successful.”
Davis congratulated Subealdea’s family for their support throughout his athletic career.
“It takes a whole family to get through this,” he said. “Everything that they sacrifice, time, money, everything else it takes to do this through sports throughout. In the school and then also away from the school as well, stuff that they do in the summer and those types of things.”
Senior season goals
For his final high school season, Subealdea has playoff aspirations for the team.
“This year, one of our main goals is to just get in the playoffs,” he said. “These past two years, we’ve been just short of making it, and I feel like my senior year, why not go out with the bang and just be the greatest we can ever be?”
