Tarik Skubal will earn $32 million next season after winning a groundbreaking arbitration case.

The Detroit Tigers are winners of the Framber Valdez sweepstakes, as they shock the MLB world on Wednesday by inking Framber Valdez to a three-year, $115 million contract. This massive deal immediately brings attention to the Tigers’ other southpaw, Tarik Skubal, who is in the midst of a historic arbitration hearing.

The arbitration hearing has concluded, and the details will be released on Thursday, but even if the Tigers meet Skubal on his $32 million demand, it’s hard to imagine that Skubal will not further become the subject of trade rumors. While it’s speculative, the Yankees are a team that has the trade assets and are one of the few teams in MLB that could realistically trade for Tarik Skubal. So, what would it take to acquire the 2X AL Cy Young winner?

What Trade Package Could Get a Tarik Skubal Deal Done?

With the Detroit Tigers fully committing financially to Framber Valdez, that means they might not be able to afford Tarik Skubal in free agency after the 2026 season, which means the logical option is to trade Skubal before he hits free agency, and the Tigers get nothing for him. A similar situation just transpired with Freddy Peralta being dealt to the Mets. The Brewers were aware they wouldn’t be able to sign Freddy, so they shipped him off and got a prospect haul in return.

In this moster trade idea, the Yankees acquire southpaw starter Tarik Skubal in exchange for starter Will Warren, Luis Gil, and prospects Spencer Jones and Elmer Rodriguez.

It’s a lot to give up, but imagine a starting rotation of Gerrit Cole, Max Fried, and Tarik Skubal. That’s a World Series-winning rotation.

Warren and Spencer Jones are the centerpiece of this deal, but if the Yankees land Skubal, they can afford to offload Warren, and then they would really just be taking a risk that Jones doesn’t totally pan out with the Tigers.

However, Detroit’s mindset behind this deal would be that they would have the strongest farm system in baseball and many controllable assets for the future.

Tarik Skubal Trade Packages Soon to Flurry

Once that arbitration news drops tomorrow regarding Tarik Skubal’s financial dispute, expect many trade packages to emerge for the game’s best starting pitcher from several MLB team aggregators.

Skubal’s 2024 stats: 192 IP, 2.39 ERA, 6.4 pWAR, 228 K’s, 174 ERA+

Skubal’s 2025 stats: 195.1 IP, 2.21 ERA, 6.5 pWAR, 241 K’s, 187 ERA+

As you can see, he’s the game’s most dominant pitcher right now, and would be an absolute luxury for any team to have at the front of their rotation.

Skubal’s quick and strong emergence as one of baseball’s best starters is sure to play a factor in this upcoming CBA discussions, as one focal point of the agreement is set to be how many arbitration years should there really be until a player can hit free agency.

The only aspect of this trade idea that gets tricky is the fact that if the Yankees are going to go all-in for Skubal, they also have to be committed to signing him to a multi-year extension, or else they will have just sold a big chunk of their future for maybe a full season of Skubal.
