MLB’s hot stove season has been scorching hot since the start of January. While the Atlanta Braves have been relatively quiet, there is still time to make an impact by signing or trading for a productive player. With the Mets having such a strong offseason, the need for the Braves to add a starter continues to grow.

While the Braves don’t necessarily have the strongest farm system and are hesitant to deal away top prospects, that might increase the chances of former All-Star catcher Sean Murphy being the centerpiece of a trade. According to FanSided’s Christopher Kline, a player-swap deal for Reds’ starter Brady Singer seems plausible.

Braves Predicted to Trade for Brady Singer

The Braves have had a solid offseason to this point, bringing in new faces Mike Yastrzemski, Robert Suarez, and Joey Payamps, while also retaining Raisel Iglesias and Ha-Seong Kim.

The issue is that due to the Braves’ starting pitcher injury history, more might still need to be done to shore up Atlanta’s starting staff.

Kline’s trade idea for the Braves is a player-swap deal, Sean Murphy for Brady Singer:

“That said, the injury bug has bitten the Braves too frequently for Alex Anthopoulos and the front office to get complacent. Brady Singer, 29, enters the final year of his contract with the Cincinnati Reds, having pitched 150-plus innings in four straight seasons. Atlanta could use that sort of reliable innings consumption.”

“Reliable innings consumption” seems to be what the Braves are going for in a possible trade, and Sean Murphy might be their only route to that. Murphy signed a six-year, $73 million deal with the Braves before the 2023 season. He was named to an All-Star team that season, but has failed to appear in 100 games each of the past two seasons.

Will the Braves Trade Sean Murphy for Brady Singer?

The Braves should be more than open to trading Sean Murphy for Brady Singer. If one side would say no to this deal, it’s the Reds, but it’s also important to note that if the Reds don’t plan to sign Singer in free agency, trading him might be the best option.

Murphy has enough power upside to carry his trade value a bit, but he’s expected to start the 2026 season sidelined recovering from hip surgery.

Brady Singer posted a 4.03 ERA over 32 starts last season and boasted a 3.71 earned run average during his 2024 campaign.

The emergence of Atlanta’s Drake Baldwin also might further urge the Braves to trade for Sean Murphy and bring in another veteran player.

And who knows, Murphy himself might even benefit from a trade like this, as Cincinnati could potentially opt to use him as a first baseman or DH.
