Would-be bullpen arms should get plenty of opportunities this spring in Padres camp.
Relievers Wandy Peralta, Alek Jacob and Ron Marinaccio will also participate in the World Baseball Classic as official rosters were announced Thursday.
Peralta will join Manny Machado and Fernando Tatis Jr. on the Dominican team, while Jacob and Marinaccio will be teammates with Italy.
With Mason Miller representing the United States, the Padres will be without four relievers who spent time in the majors at the start of the tournament in early March.
It was also announced that special assistant Mark Loretta will serve as the third base coach for team Israel, who will also roster minor league right-hander Josh Mallitz.
Other minor leaguers participating in the World Baseball Classic include right-hander Carter Loewen (Canada) and left-hander Miguel Cienfuegos.
Shortstop Xander Bogaerts (Netherlands) is one of nine players participating in their fourth World Baseball Classic, joining Salvador Pérez (Venezuela), Eddie Rosario (Puerto Rico), Tim Kennelly (Australia), Warwick Saupold (Australia), Tiago Da Silva (Brazil), Philippe Aumont (Canada), Sharlon Schoop (Netherlands) and J.C. Sulbaran (Netherlands).
Cuba’s Alfredo Despaigne and Netherlands’ Shairon Martín are on track to join Miguel Cabrera (Venezuela) and Oliver Pérez (Mexico) as the only players to participate in five World Baseball Classics.
