The Detroit Tigers appear to be heading for a change when it comes to where you’ll be tuning in to watch their games on TV this season, and the Detroit Red Wings may not be far behind in relocating their broadcasts.
Main Street Sports Group, the company behind FanDuel Sports Detroit, is on shaky ground. According to published reports, the company failed to make its February 1 rights payments to the Tigers and Red Wings.

That failed payment voided the contracts that Main Street Sports held with nine MLB teams, including the Tigers. Seven of those clubs are opting to move their broadcasts under the umbrella of MLB. The Tigers remain undecided as to their broadcasting future.
As for NHL teams such as the Red Wings, it appears that they will finish out the current season with Main Street Sports and then explore broadcasting options in the offseason.
There is a possibility that Main Street may come up with a different broadcast model. It would feature smaller guarantees in rights payment, perhaps even delayed payments, and a revenue-sharing plan. Main Street is also looking for a buyer. A proposal from streaming service DAZN met with rejection. Teams felt that DAZN’s offer for rights payments was simply too small to make the plan viable.
Main Street Sports may cease to operate at the conclusion of the current NHL and NBA seasons. FanDuel Sports Network Detroit also carries Detroit Pistons broadcasts.
Where Might Red Wings Broadcasts End Up?
MLB also produces the NHL Network, so it’s entirely possible that Red Wings games could end up in some sort of package offered by a league. While the league would be handling production and distribution, it would be a requirement of the team to arrange deals with local TV stations to carry broadcasts of games, as well as sell advertising and streaming packages.
The FanDuel RSNs may go extinct soon as Main Street Sports Group approaches a decision to liquidate the company. https://t.co/bQANzn3kzE

The Ilitch family has in the past floated the idea of launching their own in-house broadcast network to carry Red Wings and Tigers games, but that was eight years ago. There’s been little discussion of the idea since.
As for the on-air product, it is unlikely to change. Over the years, among the agencies carrying Red Wings games were PASS, Fox Sports Detroit, Bally Sports Detroit, and FanDuel Sports Network Detroit. And through every name change, the faces bringing you the games remained the same.
