CJ Abrams Nationals

A Nationals’ front office executive recently shot down speculation of the team shopping star CJ Abrams.

There have been some wild trades taking place across Major League Baseball this offseason. As the calendar turns to February, there are still plenty of names out there that are thought to be on the trade market. The Atlanta Braves are dealing with some depth issues on the infield, as Ha-Seong Kim is set to be sidelined for 4-5 months with a hand injury.

Intra-division trades are rare, but ESPN.com contributor David Schoenfield believes that the Braves could be a realistic destination for Washington Nationals‘ shortstop CJ Abrams. Abrams has recently become a subject of trade rumors and is featured in a package that includes the Braves sending three promising young players to Washington.

Braves Predicted to Land CJ Abrams in Rare Intra-division Deal

ESPN’s David Schoenfield put together this trade proposal:

Atlanta Receives: CJ Abrams,           Washington Nationals Receive: LHP Cam Caminiti, RHP Didier Fuentes, Nacho Alvarez Jr.

Here is some reasoning Shoenfield adds that shows the Nationals may want to move on from CJ Abrams:

“Abrams has three seasons of team control, which arguably makes him expendable for the starting-from-scratch-again Nationals. They’re not going anywhere this season and they’re not going anywhere next season. If you’re optimistic that the Nationals might be good by 2028, that’s one year left of Abrams, assuming they haven’t signed him to an extension.”

The Nationals have already offloaded MacKenzie Gore in a trade earlier this offseason, and Abrams could be the next to go under Washington’s new front office construct.

The Braves already have a thin farm system, so would it be wise for them to trade away three young assets for Abrams?

Should the Braves Trade for CJ Abrams?

CJ Abrams has certified himself as one of the top shortstops with a bat in his hands over the past two seasons. In 2025, he hit 19 home runs, and in his 2024 All-Star campaign, Abrams hit 20 home runs and 29 doubles. He’s also a threat on the basepaths, with consecutive seasons of 31 stolen bases.

Didier Fuentes made his MLB debut last season, but it was obvious he was rushed to the big leagues due to the Braves’ need for arms, so he struggled, but is still one of the team’s top prospects.

Nacho Álvarez Jr. helps with the Braves’ infield depth, and actually played an extended period of time at third base with Atlanta in the later months last season because of Austin Riley’s injury.

As for the Braves trading for CJ Abrams, it would give Atlanta one of the most complete lineups in the National League, but in such a tough league and division, the Braves might have to make one more notable move before the 2026 season.
