When the San Francisco Giants report soon to Spring Training, first-year manager Tony Vitello will have some veteran MLB leadership to lean upon for guidance.

On Friday, the Giants released the names of the team’s entire coaching staff that will be helping Vitello move through his initial season in the majors.

A couple of names stand out among the coaches. Ron Washington, who has plenty of experience as a manager in the big leagues, will be the Major League infield coach, according to a story from MLB.com. Washington has quite a reputation as one of the best infield coaches in baseball.

Besides being a manager, he also was first-base coach with the Atlanta Braves for a period of time. Washington has been involved in the majors as a coach or manager for 35 years. His managerial stops include with the Texas Rangers and Los Angeles Angels.

Now, Vitello also will have a close friend of his on the staff, too. Jayce Tingler, who has been a bench coach for the past four seasons with the Minnesota Twins, will fill that same role for the Giants. Vitello and Tingler were teammates when both attended the University of Missouri.

Tingler also has some major-league managerial experience, too. He served as manager of the San Diego Padres in 2020-21.

When asked about Washington during the Winter Meetings in December 2025 in Orlando, Fla., Giants president of baseball operations Buster Posey spoke highly of him.

“I think the first place you start is he’s extremely talented,” Posey said. “You don’t stay in the game as long as he’s stayed in the game if you’re not talented. And then where my head goes is how much knowledge he’s accrued just from being there and watching and coaching and listening and learning.”

Besides Washington and Tingler, other coaches joining the Giants this season include hitting coach Hunter Mense, first-base/outfield coach Shane Robinson, and third-base coach Hector Borg.

San Francisco also will have a fresh look at MLB pitching from the Giants’ director of Major League pitching Frank Anderson. Anderson, by the way, happens to be the father of former major-league pitcher Brett Anderson.

Anderson comes over from the University of Tennessee, where Vitello was head coach before taking over the Giants’ role.

Besides Anderson, others in the new pitching department include pitching coach Justin Meccage, assistant pitching coach Christian Wonders, and bullpen coach Jesse Chavez, who is fresh off an 18-year career as an MLB reliever.

Now, the Giants’ coaching staff went through some major changes after Bob Melvin was not brought back as the team’s manager this season. But four of his coaches are still going to be on Vitello’s staff this season.

They are assistant hitting coach Oscar Bernard, field coordinator and catching coach Alex Burg, quality control coach Taira Uematsu, and bullpen catcher Eliezer Zambrano.

So, the Giants are looking ahead with a different mindset for the 2026 MLB season. Let’s see if all of these changes produce a better record on the field this season. The Giants and their fans sure would like to see a winning record posted in the National League West Division.
