It has been over a year since the New York Yankees appeared in the World Series, and as the Yankees fans watch the back-to-back World Series champions, the Los Angeles Dodgers, continue to pile on the talent in free agency, frustration begins to grow.

Yankees owner George Steinbrenner and general manager Brian Cashman came out this offseason stating they will not be spending more for the 2026 season than they did in 2025, and with every major free agent out there signing somewhere else, the Yankees have not improved from last season.

Yankees fans grow restless for a World Series championship as the drought has now hit 16 seasons. In 2009, the Yankees defeated the Philadelphia Phillies.

With a future hall-of-famer in Aaron Judge, not getting another World Series championship will be a travesty, and it will not change in 2026, as their offseason so far has been an absolute failure.

Why The New York Yankees’ Offseason Has Been An Absolute Failure

A year after losing Juan Soto to the New York Mets, and most recently watching their AL East rival, the Toronto Blue Jays, make the World Series, it has been a very disappointing offseason in the Bronx.

The Yankees fans have called for Aaron Boone‘s job only for him to be extended. They have called for Anthony Volpe to stop being their everyday shortstop, and the Yankees’ strategy of signing aging veterans has produced more misses than hits.

Key Departures

– CL Devin Williams

-RP Luke Weaver

-RP Mark Leiter Jr.

-RP Ian Hamilton

-RP Jonathan Loáisiga

Not a lot is left of the Yankees, but the two biggest names in closer Devin Williams and relief pitcher Luke Weaver are massive losses to the Yankees’ bullpen. The back end of their pitching staff has to be replaced for 2026, and they have been the Yankees’ best two relief pitchers in 2025.

Key Additions

-OF Cody Bellinger (re-signed 5-year deal)

-OF Trent Grisham (re-signed, accepted qualifying offer)

-SP Ryan Weathers (via trade with Marlins)

-SP Ryan Yarbrough (re-signed 1-year deal)

-INF Amed Rosario (re-signed 1-year deal)

-SP Paul Blackburn (re-signed 1-year deal)

– 3B Paul DeJong (Milb Deal)

– RP Angle Chivilli (via trade with Rockies)

– 1B Paul Goldschmidt (re-signed 1-year deal)

Jake Cousins and Austin Slater remain free agents, but the Yankees did not go out to improve their roster for 2026. They did their best to replace the pitchers they lost to free agency and brought back some of the same players who contributed in 2025.

Retaining Cody Bellinger is an absolute win for the Yankees, but he was already on the team last year that failed. The Yankees did not do anything to sign outside talent to improve the lineup.

Aaron Judge and Cody Bellinger need help in the lineup. They can not do everything on their own; they must add more talent, but all signs are pointing to the fact that they will not.

There are only a few free agents left that can help.

Who Should the Yankees Add?

The Yankees should continue to look to add pitching depth, along with finding another above-average bat. Lucas Giolito, Max Scherzer, and Justin Verlander would all be great options for the Yankees. Giolito may be too expensive for the Yankees, but Scherzer or Verlander on a one-year deal is right up their alley.

As for hitters, the Yankees should look to Rhys Hoskins or Marcell Ozuna to play some first base in relief of Ben Rice and be utilized as a designated hitter in relief for the consistently injured Giancarlo Stanton.

The Yankees are relying very heavily on a few young players to make major steps in 2026, and if they fail, they must have a contingency plan for a veteran who has a solid baseline.

If the Yankees don’t add any more talent, they are just running it back with the same team and a worse bullpen. If they don’t add, this offseason will be solidified as an utter disaster for the New York Yankees.
