It’s always time well spent with our oldest sports newspaper pal and lifer cartoonist Mike Ricigliano, who resumed his Ko-host role at Koco’s Pub for “A Cup of Soup Or Bowl” talking about the Orioles and Ravens fortunes this year. But, more importantly, Ricig told Nestor the story about his wife’s family heading to Kenya to help families and children in need in Africa via Future In Our Hands charity mission.
Nestor Aparicio and Mike Ricigliano discuss the Baltimore Orioles and Ravens’ offseason changes. They express optimism about the Orioles, predicting a playoff run with 91 wins, citing new acquisitions like Pete Alonso and improved young talent. Concerns about the Ravens’ leadership and talent gaps are raised, particularly after the Buffalo Bills’ coaching changes. They also highlight the work of Future in Our Hands USA, an organization providing water and support in Kenya, and its efforts to raise funds through Canisius College students. The conversation concludes with a light-hearted discussion on AI-generated art.

Nestor Aparicio 00:00
Welcome home. We are W N, S T. Am 1570 task, Baltimore. We are Baltimore, positive, positively here at Koco’s Pub. We’re in beautiful laraville, which allows my co host with the k to be here with SIG. Is here. It’s all brought to you by the Maryland lottery at the candy cane cash scratch offs giveaway. Been a lucky batch. I’ve scratched I’ve had three winners so far today, beautiful. We’ve been here for a couple hours. It is a cup of soup or bowl. It is the Maryland crab cake tour, and we’re sick. And I always get together because he lives in a neighborhood, and I always tell the story of my cousin Nelson, who now has had his government taken away in Venezuela. Because my cousin Nelson, that lives here, lives in Venezuela. We were gonna meet in Colombia in March to spend time, because my cousin, I haven’t seen him in 27 years, right? Yeah. So we were gonna get together and, you know, Trump bombs, the Venezuelan Government, steals the leader. Steal the oil. Steal the oil. Of course, he stealing the oil. Yeah, that was the whole purpose. Had nothing to do with the arepa. So it might have been the rapes, but, but nonetheless, we’re sick. Is here. He’s in the neighborhood, and you live up the street.
Mike Ricigliano 01:03
You’re my co host. I had a trudge through ice to get here, of course, like anybody else, you won’t, never
Nestor Aparicio 01:08
put your headset on, right? You’re such a weirdo. Did you work at college radio or something?
Mike Ricigliano 01:14
I did not, but I had roommates that
Nestor Aparicio 01:17
did forever.
Mike Ricigliano 01:20
Come out, I have a pen and pencil in my hand, and that’s all I can do.
Nestor Aparicio 01:24
Knows how much I love this man. He was one of my first friends in 1984 at the Baltimore news American here we are, 42 years later, your wife was supposed to be here as part of a cup of soup or bowl. So here’s what, let’s pretend she’s sick. Home in bed, couldn’t make it, and she sent you as her emissary to talk about this incredible work that she does right in Africa. She is part of saving lives in Africa, and goes to Africa regularly because her sister was a saint, right, literally,
Mike Ricigliano 01:57
sister was a nun, Linda, who who sadly passed away during covid. And Terry kind of jumped in, into this organization, which is called future, future in our hands USA. And she’s not a regular visitor to Africa. I have to correct you on that. This was the first time she’d ever been to Africa. So Terry,
Nestor Aparicio 02:20
who’s your niece that goes alive a lot, who I tried to drag out here two summers ago, right? I kept dying to have them tell this story. I see are the pictures of them.
Mike Ricigliano 02:32
They have to be the ones that tell it. But I’m I’ll do the best I can in a short amount of time. It’s just this incredible organization run by a very small group of older women, basically, and one or two young people that brings water, fresh water to Kenya, supports students in Kenya and pays for a lot of projects. So they fund a lot of projects that go on in Kenya, life sustaining projects that go on in Kenya. And this year, Terry got to meet many of her clients that are in Kenya. It was a life changing experience for her, so
Nestor Aparicio 03:15
much so she can’t even speak about it.
Mike Ricigliano 03:19
She needs to be here to speak about it. I clearly organization. It’s called Future in our hands USA. So there is a, there was a future in our hands, organization, but Linda made a USA chapter of it, and that’s what they do. Future is in our hands. And they struggle. They struggle mightily to kind of keep this thing alive. And have talked about breaking it up at some points, but have kind of made their way through it. And the thing that really sustained them was they have a member of the group that is a professor at Canisius College in Buffalo, and she has a program, and she got her students involved in coming up with ways to raise funds for this organization. So they are charged with raising funds for
Nestor Aparicio 04:09
any better place than buffalo. To say, Do you want to leave buffalo? I’ll take you to Africa for a couple of weeks. Sure. Weather is better. Help people, right?
Mike Ricigliano 04:18
Sure. And these, and these students, these Canisius students, semester after semester. Now it’s been like three or four semesters. Have come up with ways of using social media that these older women don’t really to get fun, to help get funding and and events that the that go on in Buffalo, and it’s really kind of raised their level of being able to kind of help people in Africa. So I think they still want to grow it. I think if there’s people out there that are interested in this, it’s just look up future in our hands USA, on online, and you’ll find this organization, you’ll see incredible photos of of people there that that have a lot of. Hope and live in in the pictures are unbelievable. Pictures are fantastic. Pictures will lift your heart. Terry got to go on a safari while she was out there too.
Nestor Aparicio 05:09
Right now, I’m gonna pull it up right now, because I want to look at it. So, okay, yeah, it makes me happy.
Mike Ricigliano 05:15
And you should do the same out there. Just take, check out some photos from future in our hands, USA. You’ll be moved by the by the the young and older people that live in in Kenya, that struggle every day and are helped by this great organization.
Nestor Aparicio 05:31
My mom always tell me my leftovers because people in Africa are starving, sure, and your family, your wife and your your your sister in law and your your niece, doing something about changing that.
Mike Ricigliano 05:43
It’s, it’s tough for people in the United States to kind of contribute outside the country. I know there’s a lot of need in this country, but still, there’s a lot of need in that country too, and and every little bit help people. Man, we got help more. Absolutely, absolutely. You do a great job.
Nestor Aparicio 05:58
Well, I mean, you know, and you’re sort of my ringer this week because, you know, I bring you over because you’re my sports buddy. And we have a new baseball manager, we have a Pete Alonzo we stole from the Mets. We have a new football coach, we have new coordinators. We have all of this stuff going on. And, you know, race we led with feeding the children Africa, that’s the most important. And it wasn’t even patronizing. Was like real families involved in it. So let’s talk a little bit of sports here, on off. And I, I don’t take your phone calls anymore. You are my co host here at Koco. Always honored to be. So I, you know, I get to ramble on about Jesse Minter all day. So go ahead. What do you got?
Mike Ricigliano 06:35
I mean, I think just what you said is so exciting. You know, just to have a new manager and a new head coach in the
Nestor Aparicio 06:42
same I thought was more exciting when you me and shine. And we were talking about having parades, sure. Of course, we were in first place both times two years ago. That was more fun.
Mike Ricigliano 06:50
Of course, a lot of stuff went down city of might be champions. So true. Want to be champions. So true. I I’m, you know, I’m not sure how I feel about the new head coach right now. I mean, I think it seems like our defense is going to be addressed in a very big way. You know, between getting Weaver back and having mentor call the plays, I think that’s, that’s a, that’s a thing that fans have to be excited about, because we were woefully bad defense last year. So it can’t get worse. It’s only going to get better under under this guy. Young leadership is kind of exciting, too. I, you know, I had, I’m the same as some people. I had my doubts, just because, you know, he’s a harbor guy. You’ve discussed this, I’m sure, and getting another heart. It’s almost like buffalo, right? I love the bills, and the bills
Nestor Aparicio 07:45
fired their head coach. I wasn’t going to bring
Mike Ricigliano 07:48
that up. I Okay, but I’m very frustrated by that move, so I
Nestor Aparicio 07:51
and as you well, you watch your owners press conference, and there’s nothing worse than not having any confidence as a fan.
Mike Ricigliano 07:58
Exactly that was, that was the press conference was a disaster. The idea that they brought their offensive coordinator in to replace
Nestor Aparicio 08:07
they fired a guy that nobody wanted fire, that nobody thought should be fired. The fans didn’t want him fired. The team didn’t want him.
Mike Ricigliano 08:13
I mean, I know fans don’t wanted him fired, just like we know a lot, you know, but I think that’s a guy that bled red and blue bills, and it’s hard to find a guy like that. So, no, I was very unhappy that they, they canned him too. I don’t
Nestor Aparicio 08:28
know how you could be upset with Sean McDermott in Buffalo. I I don’t
Mike Ricigliano 08:31
understand because of the same we identify with it, right? A great quarterback on a team
Nestor Aparicio 08:39
fire Cal Ripken. You keep playing with him until he wins. I mean, I didn’t fire Josh, yeah, playing with him until he wins, that’s the pressure of
Mike Ricigliano 08:46
having a, you know, MVP quarterback and the Ravens
Nestor Aparicio 08:51
had the same college outfit, like throwing, throwing coaches over the well, didn’t,
Mike Ricigliano 08:55
didn’t the owner say something. Like, he saw Josh Allen crying, and so he felt he had to do something, you know, like, that’s a stupid what kind of ownership is that? You know? I mean, again, I would say frustrated, as frustrated as I’ve been with, you know, the Raven situation this year and and, you know, the whole kind of Groundhog’s Day effect of ravens every year. I think that’s the way Bill’s fans felt about this, and so they felt like a change will help them out. I don’t think it will. I think it’s I think it’s a mistake.
Nestor Aparicio 09:35
Change is much more warranted here. I after 18 years, and that’s not even a knock on hardball or anything like that. But clearly what was happening here was no longer working. That I could not say that about Buffalo. And the word was McDermott went into ownership and said, the roster isn’t good enough. We don’t have enough good I would agree with that on buffalo side, that they are a demand. Ish, their best wide receivers playing in the Super Bowl this week, exactly for your competitor, you know, I mean literally exactly.
Mike Ricigliano 10:06
They have one all pro player on their you know, one star on their team, their quarterback. The Ravens have a lot more talent sprinkled in to their roster.
Nestor Aparicio 10:15
That was the case I made for Tomlin beating Harbaugh so much over the last 10 years is Harbaugh went into every one of those Raven Steelers games with a better roster, a better quarterback, but you know, Kyle, Hamilton, roquan, Smith, Marlon, whatever it is, Derek hubri, whatever the weapon was, the Ravens had more weapons in every one of those games, and the Steelers won a whole lot more of them. And that’s an indictment of ownership, of coaching, I should say, not necessarily the players. I never felt that way about the bills. I never felt like the bills rolled onto the field with the best team against the Chiefs at any point.
Mike Ricigliano 10:50
And the bills had, you know, they had this head coach, and then they had this general manager, bean who had the owner’s ear and being one in that situation, and he’s the leadership of that franchise, and I believe that franchise will go downhill with that kind of leadership now, and without this, this head coach, I do think Joe Brady is, is probably, you know, maybe part of that equation was they wanted to keep that, because I know the Ravens weren’t hired in him. They were interested in Leonard too, and the bills hired Leonard as the defensive coordinator there. So former Raven, Jimmy Leonard, former favorite Jimmy and former bill, former Jimmy let and former jet, right, exactly. So I like
Nestor Aparicio 11:33
Jim Leonard. I feel like my size.
Mike Ricigliano 11:36
Yeah, right. So, yeah, I I, but I think just going back to Baltimore, I think I’m, I’m, I’m gonna, I believe that this is gonna work out for us, you know, somehow we’ll see, you know, we’ll see you win 11 games next year. Ravens, no, I don’t believe that. Well, okay, I don’t why, a little bit or, yeah, I’m down on the talent. Yeah, I’m down on the talent some. I mean, I don’t got to take a while. I think it’s going to take a while to kind of rebuild. I mean, where are we going to get a pass rusher from, where it’s always got a left
Nestor Aparicio 12:10
tackle from, where you get another quarterback from? What are you going to do if you get rid of your center? What are you going to do if the quarterback doesn’t renegotiate his deal? What are you going to do if the quarterbacks unhappy? It’s all over.
Mike Ricigliano 12:22
All of those things are really valid questions, and that’s why I don’t think,
Nestor Aparicio 12:26
I think I had those questions for Steve bishad. He didn’t want
Mike Ricigliano 12:30
to hear him, though, now I hear that. I just a minute on what did you think of that press conference? By the way,
Nestor Aparicio 12:34
it was very good fellas. Wasn’t it good fellas? And I’m down on Steve bati as an owner, as where he is right now. This is not the same place, not the same man I met 20 years ago, not the same countenance, certainly not the same sense of community. I mean, whatever that was to me was embarrassing showing up once every eight years. I mean, even I talked to Luke off the air, and Luke would admit this, he’ll come Friday, but and Luke and I, Luke doesn’t like to go K fab when we sit and talk about this, because he’s professionally covering the team. But even Luke said his first thought when bashati walked in there that day, literally, was, where
Mike Ricigliano 13:10
have you been? Man, yeah, like, Where have you been? Man, of course, you know
Nestor Aparicio 13:13
what I mean, and every fan should be asking that when he’s throwing me out, when he’s hiding from Justin Tucker, what you know, when there’s no accountability for any of this. Then he hires a new coach, and he gets in the room, and he sits in the stands. He sits with the employees, and watches his employees perform on a stage. Eric, the Costa looks really uncomfortable to me, like when I’ve seen dicostal. I know Eric 30 years Eric looks uncomfortable, and it’s, I don’t know. This has been a very uncomfortable period of time.
Mike Ricigliano 13:42
I feel a little shaky with the leadership right now in in this group too. I mean, I think some of these hires have been on surface. They seem like good hires So, and this organization is pretty good at doing all of that stuff, but I I’m a little shakier about directions. They don’t
Nestor Aparicio 14:00
make the playoffs this year, they’ve lost their way right there two years out.
Mike Ricigliano 14:04
And I mean, it’s not what he said. He said, you know, a number of years that he gives the new coach right to get to get to a Super Bowl again. So, you know, it’s not what
Nestor Aparicio 14:13
the Super Bowl I’m just talking about, and being back to where they were with our ball, which is winning 1011, 12 games a year, and being where the bills are, winning 1011, 12 games a year. I think that’s all you can hope for. Because if you’re looking for that year where you win 15 games and then you get beaten in the second round, or you lose the championship game at home, all of that was predicated on a fumble, a play, a drop ball. Mark Andrews, dropping the ball kick or missing a kick, right? The head coach will take the downfall for that. But when you’re Mike Tomlin and you’ve never had a sub 500 season, no matter what the circumstances are, that really speaks volumes to me. And I think the same thing for har ball to be feeded in the way he is getting 100 he got a promotion, more power, a better deal, and less lower expectation, less lower expectations, or. Were that was a good deal for him, so he really made out. So I’m not bullish on the Ravens this moment, and I don’t need to be. And I’ll say that to Luke, I don’t need to be bullish on the Ravens till August. Wake me, wake me, Labor Day. And I’ll tell you how I feel about them, because they’re not even an entity at this point. But the Orioles are becoming more of that as you wear your Oreo hat for SIG is here. Micro signal, a long time, sports cartoonist, my pal, we’re Koco’s. We’re doing the Maryland crab cake tour. But this week’s special. It’s a cup of Super Bowl. We already talked about the Africa movie. Give that website again for the
Mike Ricigliano 15:31
African future in our hands. F, f i o h, future USA, us, F, I O H, USA. Future in our hands.
Nestor Aparicio 15:40
USA, all right, so Orioles. Yeah, you shocked by this? Make make your shock face for saying I’m more bullish on the Orioles. I, like the Orioles, have a better chance of playing in the World Series this year than the Ravens do of playing in the Super Bowl next year.
Mike Ricigliano 15:56
I also am bullish they’re going to do that.
Nestor Aparicio 16:00
But I said to Luke, I think they’ll win 91 games this year. I think they will be a playoff team this year. I don’t even know what else they’re doing. I just feel like there’s that thing where the sophomore Jinx happens and Westberg is hurt. Rushman is a mess. Colton cows are gets hurt, Anderson has a little bit of a down year. They miss Santon there. Everybody got hurt. They went in the toilet in April. Never came out of it. I’m I’m not calling it a mulligan, because it happened, but I’m not counting that. That was last year. This is this year. Do I think they can begin the season 10 and seven in route to 24 and 18 in route to 35 and 23 Yes, I believe. Can they get good pitching three or four days? Yes, out of five? Yes. Will they hit the ball better than last year? I think they will. I think I beat Alonso. They spent money. So for all of that, that doesn’t mean, what Boston, New York, Toronto, how they’re going to be but the Orioles, in their own little cylinder, will not be a last place team this year, in my mind,
Mike Ricigliano 17:06
right now, because, because of the new additions, and also because, like you said, the the young talent that is, you know, the nucleus of this team at that they expected to step up last year is due to Step up, you know, and some of those, not everyone, Will, but some of those guys are going to step up this year and have big seasons, I think. And then you combine that with the Alonso’s and some of the pitching acquisitions they make, and I think we’ve got, we’ve got the makings of a contending team right here. I think it’s, I think it’s pretty exciting.
Nestor Aparicio 17:38
I don’t think they’ve had a great offseason. But if you’re going to spend $200 million you know, in a general sense, bringing in a star player, bringing somebody in the middle lineup, I think there’s a stabilization for for Alonso. I’m two months into thinking about it now, right, right, but I think there’s a stabilization of that that really is going to help holiday Henderson, whomever is around him, in a general sense. And I don’t really like when you import leadership like I feel like the Ravens tried to do that with roquan Smith on the defensive side of the ball. I think some degree, they tried to do that with Derek Henry on the offensive side of the ball. It worked with Frank Robinson Well, which gives us a chance to promote Dan Rogers play March 5, talk to Dan, our former colleague as well. But I agree with that, and I think there’s a thing where importing a leader when you don’t have one, it’s kind of necessary, right? I mean, if you look at what the Orioles have been the last couple of years, it has felt like once the man they got the manager fired. The manager got fired. Manzalino never felt like that was going to be that thing for him as a last place manager. He was always lame duck. I feel like last year was really a mess for them, with the new owner and all that. I’m not giving the new owner the benefit of the doubt. I still think they’re lost as an ownership group until further notice, but I do think what Elias has done with the money and the getting rid of angelos, but this is really about one, one, Adley rutschman, Gunner Henderson. You know, where, beside they gave him all that money. Is he going to be a real factor this year, and 500 at bats and 25 home runs as a rookie? I don’t know, but I feel like they’ve got enough bodies in the mix here, and enough young guys that have struggled a little bit, which is not a bad thing. Yeah, I struggled as a young guy. So did you we figured it out? Right? Is how you figured out. Some guys, like rushman never struggled in his life until now. So that’s all. They’re vital. That’s a different thing to try to figure out. But I feel like there are tools there. There’s pedigree there. I’m gonna put $1 on the pedigree. And, you know, I’m not a gambling guy, we’re sick. But I looked up the number last week with, with Luke over, under, on Orioles wins, and it was a shade, right? It was like 85 and a half. Some casinos are giving you 85 and a half. Some are 80. Nine and a half. Okay, 89 and a half, that’s a tough one to bet over 85 and a half, I’ll take that all day. I’ll take that. I’ll take that all day.
Mike Ricigliano 20:07
I’ll take that. I still think they’re I still think they may add a pitcher or two before it’s all over, and then I think you’d like those odds even better. July. They can always do that if there’s that kind of team. No, you don’t think they’re gonna get go get someone now, you don’t think proper vault.
Nestor Aparicio 20:23
I don’t know if they’re, you know, they want to make that kind of investment of 30 zero pitcher.
Mike Ricigliano 20:27
No, I would be, I’d also be geek if Verlander was coming here, you know, a qualified arm that bolsters the staff and a kind of a fragile staff, that they have guys that get hurt a lot.
Nestor Aparicio 20:44
Efflin, well, Rogers and Brad ish have to be right, or everything I’m talking about is pub kiss like, literally right and healthy, they have to be what they were the last few months of last year. And I
Mike Ricigliano 20:55
would say even efflin on that, on that, you know, effluent have really quality picture that had a bad season last year because he was not healthy.
Nestor Aparicio 21:03
But if it comes back to him, and he gets healthy and in July, he’s good, I’ll take that tonight Exactly, exactly. All right, we’re both in agreement. We’re gonna have a parade one day. We’re gonna have a parade here. We’re sick. Is here. Mike rossignliano, you still drawn? What are you drawing?
Mike Ricigliano 21:18
Just here and there. Not that much. Not that much.
Nestor Aparicio 21:21
No, no, we’re seeing I want to say this, and not that you’ve become outdated, or my incredible writing skills have become outdated, but I can create art with AI now.
Mike Ricigliano 21:32
Oh, okay, instantaneously. Okay, so do one? Do one for me. I did.
Nestor Aparicio 21:37
I did one on chat GPT here earlier, because everybody was doing it’s literally right on the front of my right on the front of my finger. Hold on. I’ll put my clone here. That’s great. I did a character caricature creation is what I did right here, based on everything you know about me. Can you create a fun current caricature? Let’s see this right and whimsical, irreverent but poignant as well for my work. Absolutely, I can make it not just like you, but a guy with a mic. I need one thing first. So it asked me for a picture. Wanted to know whether they wanted the Baltimore ring master of truth that no one listens. Everyone hears model or the crab cake tour, road warrior poet. Which one do you want? The ring master sounded? Gave me all three. Okay, so there’s the ring master. It’s really good. It’s a ring master, right there. All right, that’s it. Now. Now this, this is the wnst radio guy. What do you think of that? I’ll do that there. What do you think of that mistake? You see, that’s good. All right, you like that? That’s good. Like that? Very good. All right. And then, then there’s the crab cake guy, I look a little, I look a little devious there, don’t I don’t look spot on like a troublemaker.
Mike Ricigliano 22:46
You are a bit of an instigator nest. So
Nestor Aparicio 22:50
I’m provocative.
Mike Ricigliano 22:52
It’s never gonna replace real cartoonists. I’ll say that
Nestor Aparicio 22:56
my hair looks good, though it does really air. That hair is not that good is it? I think
Mike Ricigliano 23:02
as it gets better and better it is, it is going to be something to be reckoned with. You know, all right. Cartoon is right, funny though.
Nestor Aparicio 23:10
It did this. It did this in one second. So hold on a second here. Let’s do this right now. I’m going to do this just for fun. Here’s what we’re going to do. You and I are going to take a picture, and I’m going to put it up. I’m going to put this right into chat, G, P, T, right now before I go and I want to say, and here’s what I’m going to do, I’m going to put the picture here of us, and I’m going to add it, and I’m going to see if it creates a cartoon of the two of us, which it will it’s going to create. How long does it typically take? Well, I put it in thinking mode. So if I put it in fast mode, okay, it would happen faster I put in thinking mode. So problem is, it’s not getting internet here. That’s a real problem. When I come back in the next segment, I will have the cartoon.
